Movie Reviews of The Asphalt JungleMovie Review: Huston Highlight Summary: 5 Stars
My own favorite John Huston film; superior in its way to his other great projects like "The Maltese Falcon" and "Treasure of the Sierra Madre." Sterling Hayden is ostensibly the star but in fact the film is dominated by Sam Jaffe, the only time, to my knowledge, this remarkable actor was given a role of this magnitude, and he ran a mile with it. As the oversexed immigrant criminal mastermind he pulls an assortment of hoodlums large and small into his orbit with the promise of a big score. The supreme irony comes when he is double-crossed by putting too much faith in the word of one of his conspirators. Huston was such a wonderful director because he never let technical showboating get in the way of the story, and he was rewarded here by well-nigh perfect performances from everyone in the cast. Adapted from another novel by W. R. Burnett, also author of "High Sierra", and a man whose fiction and scriptwriting made Hollywood a fortune over more than two decades.
Movie Review: Far Far Beyond "A Classic Movie" (An Example Of Karma) Summary: 5 Stars
Someone here wrote that this movie is showing its age. Nothing is further from the truth. A movie like "Pulp Fiction" doesn't come close to this serious movie. This movie has "Pulp Fiction" beat all to hell because the plot is more real. The acting is at a MUCH higher level. It's the strong characterization developed by superbly executed acting in this movie that sets "The Asphalt Jungle" above movies like "Pulp Fiction". Every character in this movie was 'done in' by his/her own foibles. This, is an example of karma, an Eastern concept that was used in pulp crime movies of that era. John Huston conciously emphasized that concept, karma, in "The Asphalt Jungle". You will not finde a better "Crime Genre" film than this one.
Movie Review: Tough to beat Summary: 5 Stars
John Huston's noir masterpiece about a carefully planned jewel heist that goes terribly wrong. What makes the picture so interesting is that each character is given a psychological motivation for participating in the crime. Once the robbery begins to go haywire we can see the irony behind each one's motivation, an often copied idea. Sterling Hayden is Dix, who just wants to get back to his father's horse farm in Kentucky, and Sam Jaffe is the mastermind whose love of music finally does him in. Marilyn Monroe appears as the floozy Angela. One of the great movies.
Movie Review: A real gem Summary: 5 Stars
This movie is fabulous. It's not only well acted, but the story and the lighting (or lack of) makes this one of my favorite movies from this time period. Hayden (Dix) is one terrific actor - watch for the niceties when he is talking with Jean Hagen (Doll). One to be watched over and over as you catch new things upon reviewing. Huston's characters have big plans that are improbable from the start.
See Hayden in The Killing (1956) directed by Kubrick.
Movie Review: Super tough , super smart , great screenplay , great character actors and actresses Summary: 5 Stars
John Huston was a bona fide genius . Here is just another example of his brilliance . Co-written and directed by John , this hard boiled winner boasts tons of great talent with nary a star in sight . Future stars , Sure . Released in 1950 , this film certainly helped usher in a harder , more realistic and often smarter type of caper film than was peviously seen (by and large) . Essential .
