Movie Reviews of The Art of ViolinMovie Review: Invaluable for those with knowledge Summary: 4 Stars
The two documentaries featured here are an invaluable resource for those familiar with violin playing and violin technique. Featuring interviews with today's top violinists and a gold mine of rare and meticulously reconstructed footage, the documentaries survey the playing style and contributions of all the major violin virtuosos of the 20th century. The video is definitely intended for musicians or those very familiar with the playing of the violin, as no lay explanation is provided for technical jargon. Nevertheless, this professional and smoothly flowing documentary is an extraordinary resource of footage and information difficult to obtain elsewhere.
Movie Review: it should really be 4 and 1/2 stars Summary: 4 Stars
monsaigeon's most recent film definitely brings an interesting combination of features. as far as the filming techniques and the work of un-puzzling it all together, his job is just wonderful--nice transitions, nice buildup. at times the viewer just remains wishing for the music to continue. hard to understand how the 4 musical-referees were chosen. especially controversial i found Hilary Hahn's presence. the value brought by her could be at most didactical--how the younger generations look back into history. as a suggestion, the movie might have benefited from opinions of the great violin-players--even if those where taken from written materials.
Movie Review: Great Documentary Summary: 4 Stars
I thought this DVD was very interesting. What makes it so valuable is its rare video footage of the great masters. A must for any serious violinist. Some parts were entertaining while others almost had me asleep. This is because, as viewers we pay attention to the jewish violinists who are quite good, but I was falling asleep when they talked about french violinists. Another not so great thing is only commentators are Pearlman and Hahn. I thought they should include more current commentators.
Movie Review: the art of violin Summary: 4 Stars
As I know, this is the first published material contaning ex-virtuosi of violin playing. Historic visions of the greatest violinists of the past-time are sufficient to excite who loves classical music. Too many appearance of Sir Y Menuhin's playing is a flaw of a precious stone.
Movie Review: Great Entertainment Summary: 4 Stars
I have watched this DVD 3 times within the first 2 weeks of getting it. Very good music and performances by those violin virtuoso's. Classical music lovers should own this one.
