Movie Reviews of The Art of ViolinMovie Review: Perfect for teenagers! Summary: 5 Stars
Before seeing this film, I had little interest in picking up my violin. Now, it's become a strife to master this instrument. Seeing the opening of this documentary of different virtuosos playing Mendelsohn's Violin Concerto made my mouth drop!
I was constantly asking, "How did they do that...with a violin?!"
This film is a mix of wonderful commentary by Itzhak Perlam and old film archives of great violinists. After I saw this, my idols changed from Barry Bonds to Fritz Kreisler! Also, the film shows a lot of wonderful violin repetoire, so if you want to build up your classical music library, you can look to this movie for some great-sounding pieces, as well as the names of the violinists that played them.
Movie Review: Wonderful Summary: 5 Stars
I will not tell what is on this DVD. I will tell you that I have had it for a year and that I watch it at least once a week. I have sent copies to my grandson and my granddaughter who are both violinists. This DVD has all of the heros of my youth and has helped put them in perspective. It made me realize that I LOVE the violin. Since first seeing this DVD I have become the First Violin of the Rio Bravo String Quartet and the concert master of the New Horizons Orchestra. The only thing that I missed was the playing of the Mozart concerto for violin No. 3 in G major by the violinist Jaques Tibeau. If anyone knows where I can get that old recording, contact me at quartet@peoplepc.com.
Movie Review: A Film Every Violinist Must See Summary: 5 Stars
The Art of Violin opens the eyes of the violinist to the most important aspects of the violin world. The rare and extensive footage of the world's greatest violinists is a privelege to view. This dvd is truly valuable not only because of the vast exposure to the greatest violinists but also to much of the great violin repertoire. My favorite part is the opening in which pieces of the Mendelssohn concerto are played by different violinists and then put together so that the whole movement runs smoothly but the various styles of each artist are portrayed. If you are a violinist, you must not go another day without seeing The Art of Violin!
Movie Review: I Love this DVD, A Must But for Violin Enthusiasts Summary: 5 Stars
I watched this DVD over a thousand times probably. This is a extraordinary video. It talks about giant violinists of the 20th centuray, which includes Mischa Elman, Jascha Heifetz, Yehudi Menuhin, Nathan Milstein, Ivry Gitlis, David Oistrakh, and many other marvelous violinists. The videos even shows the rare recordings of Eugene Ysaye. In addition, the video also expresses many beautiful violin masterpieces played by worldclass violinists. I play the violin myself and before watching this DVD, I did not know many great violinist nor violin literature. Now, I learned the ways and styles of many violinists and violin compositions.
Movie Review: a violinists essential Summary: 5 Stars
This excellently conceived DVD is a remarkable compilation of excerpts of the playing of arguably the most gifted and individualistic performers of the last century. It is especially revealing to hear and see this playing at a time when, perhaps due to the very availability of recording and world travel, otherwise excellent players begin to be indistinguishable from each other. This DVD documents playing of incredible individuality, from the elegance of a Jacques Thibaud to the fire of a Ginette Neveu, from the flawlessless of a Heifetz to the warmth and humanity of a Menuhin. A treasurable release in every way!
