Movie Reviews of The April FoolsMovie Review: Overlooked gem that is more memorable than Apollo 11's landing Summary: 5 Stars
When this film was released I was in my teens. I went to the movies alone, often, and would go see films I liked multiple times. I went to see this one a lot, sitting in the theater for multiple showings. I remember the theater (the Miracle in Miracle Mile, Coral Gables, Florida) had a TV set in the lobby so people could watch Apollo 11 land. I had already seen The April Fools several times and I walked out, watched the lunar landing, and went back to what really mattered to me; the unfolding fairy tale I still dream of as an older, cynical man. Bring on the DVD! The chemistry between Deneuve and Lemmon is magical, soothing, as opposed to the hysterical (though exhilarating) teaming up of MacLaine and Lemmon. The music, I still recall the music when the two are dancing in the disco. I love DWarwick's original rendition, from the film's soundtrack. It is my second favorite all time song after The Look of Love (both are Bacharach/David classics). I want the DVD!!!!!!!!!
Movie Review: Waiting for the DVD release ... Summary: 5 Stars
I discovered the title song to "The April Fools" before seeing the movie and immediately thought it an instant classic. Of course, I wanted to know the film behind the music. Boy, was I knocked out. I love the way this picture looks, sounds and feels. It's like a time capsule of late 1960s -- the absurd and lovely modern art, Bacharach tunes (and Hamlisch score), amplified fashion, and a swinging social scene. But at heart, its romantic story is timeless, as are the performances. I never get tired of watching this one. I only hope that some day soon they release it on DVD. The Jack Lemmon Collection would be glaringly incomplete without it. Hopeless romantics, unite!
Movie Review: A Fantasy Fufilled Summary: 5 Stars
I first saw this movie as a late night rerun just a few years ago. I was immediately captivated by Catherine Deneuve in the same manner as the character played by Jack Lemmon. I began to feel as if I were living that fantasy through Lemmon--every sad or happy emotion, especially love. I cared about what happened in the movie as if it were my own life experience. The fact that the story and lines might be cliche or saccharin mattered not to me. I was completely swept up in the relationship between Deneuve and Lemmon. It is taking forever for a DVD version to be released. What gives? VHS copies are scarcer than hens' teeth. This is my all time favorite love story.
Movie Review: Imafool for April Fools Summary: 5 Stars
I LOVE this film. Everyting about it is pure delight and magic. It is the perfect bookend for/to Breakfast at Tiffany's. Brillant casting, wonderful direction, visually outstanding and just beautiful to watch. Just watch The opening party scene and you to will be hooked. Tiffany's opening shot does/did the same thing. I have an old VHS copy that is plain worn. When will this film be released on DVD???? The wait is killing me. Please release this GEM, please...
Movie Review: The Aprils Fools NOW! Summary: 5 Stars
I too worked at a theater when this movie came out and it never got old and I saw it a million times. Ok not a million but a lot. I have a scratchy version I taped off of tv but still watch it now and then and hope this is released on Amazon soon. I have seen a couple of sites but don't think they were in the USA. Anyway this movie is one of the best examples of the 60's music, fashion and a joy to watch. Come on Amazon Christmas is coming!
