Movie Reviews of The Anniversary PartyMovie Review: One of the best of the year, so far. Summary: 5 Stars
Starring, co-written, and co-directed by Jennifer Jason Leigh. Although Jennifer has a tendency in the past decade to consistently pick dark subject matter, I am pleased to see that she has grabbed a-hold of some power in the independent film world. This is one of those small budget films that is almost entirely shot in one solitary location, which means that it's merit stands upon it's character development and dialogue. And to my surprise this film is about an appetizer and drinks evening of close friends party - booze, appetizers, charades, swimming, etc. etc. Some of the most enjoyable dialogue is because it seems to have an unedited genuiness. It is nice to see certain familiar acting faces - Jennifer Beals (forever remembered in FLASHDANCE), Phoebe Cates (her only memorable film being FAST TIMES AT RIDGEMONT HIGHT) acting opposite her real-life husband Kevin Kline, and big Oscar winning star Gwenyth Paltrow making a supportive appearance (good for her, quality over big budget.)
Movie Review: Started out slow, but then I was sucked in!! Summary: 5 Stars
I saw this movie today and i thought it was great. It had all of my favorite people... most old, and some new! I love Kevin Kline and Phoebe Cates, also their kids in real life, Greta and Owen Kline.. Jane Adams was great as a neurotic, pessimistic mother, who let loose later on. (You may remember her as Joy Jones in Happiness) John C. Reilly is always awesome! Not only does the Peter Sellers lookalike look like him, but he does a great impression as well. Supposedly, this movie is like a BiG Chill for the 2000's (which I never saw, but should) with a lot of great moments, comic and serious. It was a typical party with swimming, charades, and neighbors that hate your dog. Normally, i think Gwyneth Paltrow is a tiny bit overrated, but it's cool when she does projects like this. ...So, like i mentioned, it started out a little slow with the jokes only a little funny and some awkward, but by the end I was engrossed---I loved it!
Movie Review: Seamless, Surprising, and Strong Summary: 5 Stars
How one film can acheive as high climaxes within both the comedic and dramatic elements is difficult to explain. It should, however, say something of the masterpiece this film is. From the very opening, the superb cast and writing pulls you in, laughing at the awkward moments between guests as they arrive at the recently-reconciled couple's 6th anniversary party, but at the same time bringing you emotionally closer to each character and their struggles. As the night progresses the fun party turns into a touching exploration into the heart of relationships. Leigh and Cummings are convincingly committed, Paltrow a great airy fledgling actress, and Cates and Kline the "perfect" couple with the skeletons in the closet. Extraordinary ensemble, and eerily fitting direction; here manically overstated, there elusively subtle. You WILL love this movie, and pat yourself on the back for going.
Movie Review: A Simple, Real, Honest Film About Life In LA Summary: 5 Stars
If you want to know the ins and outs of the film and characters, read other reviews. I have watched this film on Independent Film Channel many times and only recently purchased it for my library. Alan Cumming is just incredible. You realize that actors are play-acting but after a while they become quite real. For those of you who complained about the drugs etc. this party is Miss Sara's Daycare compared to what really goes on out there. This 'party' is quite sedate. The story line is very interesting and quite real. The performances are all excellent. It is the kind of film to watch on a weekend night with a light dinner on the TV tray. And a nice glass or two of good wine. I really like this film very much. See it just for Mr. Cumming. He is worth the price of admission.
Movie Review: I enjoyed this movie...... Summary: 5 Stars
I cannot believe all of the negative reviewers. Obviously you have never had an adult party where people behave like teenagers after being delt alcohol mixed with a drug nobody has ever tried before at their age. At least not here. But I had a similar party, and it ended similarly. Fights happen, but not as serious. You have to take things that happen at party's with open mindedness or not have them. Your husband or wife or girlfriend...etc., is not going to behave as usual and you see a bad side of them. If a relationship can't handle one party like this one, it probably can't survive a marriage. The story kept me interested almost the whole way through except for the female gossip got alittle boring, otherwise very watchable, funny and tragic. I would like to see it again.
