Movie Reviews of The Andromeda StrainMovie Review: Smart, thrilling, and entertaining. Summary: 5 Stars
It is nice to find a movie that believes that its viewers have an IQ over 60. Hollywood doesn't make enough of these types of movies.
The movie itself is quite thrilling. The last half an hour actually has you sitting on the edge of your seat. I found it to be quite entertaining and well worth checking out.
The acting wasn't the best, but I've most definately seen worst. It was refreshing for the director to choose several "no name" actors so that we can enjoy the progress of the story and not be distracted by celebrities. It added a lot of realism to the movie.
The best part about the DVD was the makeing-of feature. It is amazing how much was done with the lack of technology that Hollywood has now. It was even interesing how they had killed their monkey. If you enjoy the movie I highly suggest you check out the feature as well. It is only half an hour long but I had wished it could have been longer and more detailed.
Movie Review: Classic Sci-Fi Summary: 5 Stars
Based on Michael Chricton's book, the movie Andromeda Strain faithfully follows in it's footsteps. It explores the story of a group of hand picked scientists who are called together to study an alien virus brought from space via a returning space probe. The probe crash landed in a remote town in the American southwest and when it was opened it killed almost every inhabitant. The government instituted a coverup so as not to panic the populace while the scientists studied the disease in an attempt to understand it's nature. While you might associate a laboratory movie as being tedious, this is turned into a taught thriller that effectively holds your attention to the end. This will not have a broad appeal, you'll have to have some interest in the topic. Also, unlike many movies, they will expect you to understand the basic concepts of what they're doing, rather than dumbing it down severely. Very much worth the watch however.
Movie Review: A must have for any Sci Fi fan Summary: 5 Stars
The original 1971 version of "The Andromeda Strain" has actually withstood the passage of time quite nicely. The stark sets help keep the film from aging, giving it an almost timeless reference. The flashing computer consoles with simple displays are obviously dated, but that's about it. The story of a deadly microbe from a recovered space probe is well told, very plausible and still timely.
The DVD transfer displays great on an HD system, rivaling the better DVD transfers of many recently released movies. The sound is basic 2-channel stereo but that's really the only drawback to the disc.
Many consider "The Andromeda Strain" a Sci-Fi classic; some don't. Count me in the "this is a must-have Sci-Fi classic" movie category.
Movie Review: 601... Summary: 5 Stars
THE ANDROMEDA STRAIN is solid sci-fi at its best. After a biological catastrophe wipes out a small town, four intrepid scientists work against time to find a solution to a very possible, extremely lethal global pandemic. The story takes us into a secret underground facility where things get a lot worse before they get better. Don't expect warp-speed or Jedi knights here! This is sci-fi of the speculative variety. However, that doesn't mean there are no thrills or suspense (how does imminant nuclear obliteration sound?). I love this movie and place it on my top ten sci-fi list w/ 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY, (THE ORIGINAL) PLANET OF THE APES, ALIEN, THE TIME MACHINE, etc. Highly recommended...
Movie Review: Our old fears of contagion have resurfaced, and this is a great one Summary: 5 Stars
If you focus on the technology, Andromeda Strain may seem hopelessly dated. A computer that takes up an entire room can't do what a netbook can do. But look beyond the dated tech, and you'll see a story that is as riveting and as terrifying as it was 30 years ago. The scene in which the bio-hazard van is driving through the eerily quiet town still gives me the chills, as does watching the germ grow. We're as fascinated and afraid of germs and contagion now as we were then, maybe more, and that gives this movie currency. Add great acting and a truly suspenseful story, and you've got a gripping sci-fi/horror flick that is still worth watching.
