Movie Reviews of The Andromeda Strain

Movie Review: first rate scifi: mystery, danger, politics, and accurate science
Summary: 5 Stars

I have not seen this in 35 years, and I must say that it is still a wonderfully rivetting story full of surprises, good characters, and all the virtues of hard scifi. You can believe it, it gets you to think, and is fun to watch.

The thriller aspect - a near-whole town dead - is foremost as experts race against time to halt a contagion of a deadly and mysterious new life form. This is great fun as the mystery is explored and ne dangers discovered.

There is a wonderful inquiry into the nature of life and what extra-terrrestial forms may take, including danger to earth-spawned forms. The scientitst characters transmit their fascination and passion with great success.

Finally, there is also an ethical and political dimension to it, as the scientists wonder as to the purpose of the secret facility - for germ warfare scenarios? - and whether the organism was sought as a weapon for development. These questions are left unresolved. That makes the film truly first rate.

Warmly recommended. It was as interesting and dense as the first time I saw, as a high school freshman.

Movie Review: Better than the recent TV mini series
Summary: 5 Stars

This movie follows Michael Crichton's novel closer then the later TV mini series making it a better telling of the story. The drama revolves around a team of scientists investigating a contagion that has, aside from two people, has wiped out a small isolated town. While the technology used is firmly rooted in 1971, it is presented in a way that makes it seem timeless.

That said there are some logical gaffs carried over from the novel that while somewhat noticeable in 1969 have only become more glaring over time. The really annoying one is the lack of a redundant notification system for critical communications (like a flashing light) especially for what in the end is a military complex. Then there is the issue of the computer not displaying data it recorded for one scientist but showing it when another accesses the exact same data.

However these are minor flaws as the interaction between the major and minor characters keeps the story moving along and unlike the TV series there are not a host of other science fiction plot threads thrown in to distract from the main story.

Movie Review: Aandromeda Strain. AWESOME!!!
Summary: 5 Stars

For those of you who wrote neagtive reviews. You must be young, or never saw it when it first came out.

I saw this when I was a kid. Remembered the story line, and a few images, but it stayed with me. One of those movies that some how stay in your mind even as years pass. I finally bought this (the negative reviews here did make me put off buying it for a while) and watched it today. It was AWESOME!!! Most times I only watch part of a movie, then finish it later. Not this time. I first watched all the extras, then started the movie. It totally drew me in. I think the only thing dated about it is some of the cars driven in the movie. Great sets, great story, and good acting. I'm sure the animal rights people had a hay day with this, but if you watched the extras, no animals died, and they were well taken care of. I really liked Kate Reid. Awesome performance.

If you're interested in this movie, but aren't sure about buying it. Don't read the bad reviews here. It will keep you from owning an Awesome moive.

:-)

Movie Review: great movie
Summary: 5 Stars

A U.S. Army satellite (Scoop VII) falls to earth near Piedmont, New Mexico. The recovery team experiences difficulties as it becomes clear that the satellite has performed its intended function all too well, and has brought back something from space. A team of scientists is assembled in a high-tech, underground facility to identify and defeat the "enemy" before it is too late. Written by Bruce Janson {bruce@cs.su.oz.au}

When the capsule of the Scoop Mission returns to Earth and lands in the small town of Piedmont, it brings a mutant living being and all the population, except a crying baby and an old man with ulcer, dies with clotted blood. A team of five scientists - the leader Dr. Jeremy Stone, Dr. Charles Dutton, Dr. Mark Hall, Dr. Ruth Leavitt and Dr. Kirkie - are summoned and gathered together in the top secret Wildfire facility. Fighting against time, they try to understand the reason why the old man and the baby survived and research an antidote to Andromeda, the ultimate biological weapon. Movie Review: Best Adaptation of Crichton's Work Ever
Summary: 5 Stars

Michael Crichton's work often may be formulaic, but in the Andromeda Strain, he takes full advantage of a standard sci-fi formula to create a gripping, frightening tale of biological disaster. The film, based on his book of the same title, is by far the best and most loyal adaptation of Crichton's work to the the screen, far superior to B-movies like Congo, Sphere, and even the blockbuster Jurassic Park.

The premise: a crashed space probe releases the Andromeda Strain, an alien bacteria that coagulates human blood. The scientists dispatched to study the bacteria in an underground biocontainment facility soon find themselves in a struggle of science vs. nature and eventually discover the Andromeda Strain's weakness in a very H.G. Wells-esque realization.

Overall, the film is well done and enjoyable despite its reliance on formula for its plot, and though slightly dated, the tale is still compelling today, particularly in the climate of biowarfare and bioterror that has come to dominate the public consciousness post-9/11.
