Movie Reviews of The Amityville Horror (Widescreen Special Edition)

Movie Review: Pure Hollywood Garbage. Simply BAD!
Summary: 1 Stars

My husband and I LOVED the original Amityville and were SO disappointed by this remake. With the special effects we have nowadays I thought this movie would have been great, I was wrong. It was pure Hollywood garbage.

Movie Review: More then just another re-telling of the quasi-factual Amityville Horror
Summary: 4 Stars

Just the name of this film constitutes a long sigh - 'How many times are they going to make this hokey story into yet another film?' And yet the current team of director Andrew Douglas, screenwriter Scott Kosar (based on Jay Anson's novel) and a cast of fresh faces to the genre carry off this much told tale with vigor and a good dollop of tension.

For starters the film opens with the re-enactment of the 'actual crime'. Apparently in 1974 Ronald DeFeo (here Brendan Donaldson) murdered his parents and siblings in a terrific old house in Amityville, NY. One year later the Lutz family discovers their dream house and buys it outright, opening their next 28 days to visions of ghosts, terror, demons, hallucinations and pathological changes among themselves until they finally flee the haunted house.

From the start we know that contractor George Lutz - Ryan Reynolds - (the new husband of Kathy) - Melissa George - has problems establishing himself as the 'stepfather' to reluctant children Billy (Jesse James), Michael (Jimmy Bennett) and Chelsea (Chlo? Grace Moretz). Once the family is ensconced in the house Chelsea begins to play with the ghost of Jodie DeFeo (Isabel Conner) and George's personality changes as a result of the house's curse. It all comes down to terror in the requisite thunder, lightning and rain of all horror films until the family hits crisis state and leaves the house behind.

The ghost effects are well done and the cinematography by Peter Lyons Collister and the musical score by Steve Jablonsky create a dark, ominous atmosphere. But the real reason to watch this little thriller is the work of Ryan Reynolds as George, released from his usual silly potty mouth roles in teenie films to show that he indeed can act, and keep his own brand of edgy humor intact - and that is no slight feat. Fortunately he is given the opportunity to display his extraordinarily hunky physique throughout the film, reason enough to see the movie! Melissa George is likewise excellent as the tortured mother and is a perfect foil for Reynolds. Not a great film, but certainly one that exceeds expectations set by previous forays into this overused story. Grady Harp, January 07

Movie Review: Not a masterpiece...but good horror
Summary: 4 Stars

This movie made me cringe in several places. I couldn't take it when the little girl was balancing herself on the top of the roof. The camera angles really got me. And when George made the kid hold the log wile he swung the axe to chop it was a reeal nail biter.

If you over analize it, you'll be disappointed. But if you approach this fast moving film as a joyride through terror...hop on!

At least rent it if you don't buy it.

Movie Review: TRUE STORY OR NOT?
Summary: 5 Stars

IF THIS IS A TRUE STORY, THE WHAT ABOUT RON DIFFAIO, THE SON THAT SHOT IS WHOLE FAMILY IN THE HOME. THE POLICE SAY INSURANCE, BUT LOOK AT WHAT THIS FAMILY WENT THROUGH. WHAT A MYSTERY.

Movie Review: THIS MOVIE IS VERY DIFFERENT THAN THE STORY!!
Summary: 3 Stars

This is a good horror movie but it has nothing to do with the original true story told by the Lutz family. The movie could have been more scarier if it had the girl jodie looking like a pig with red eyes. George doesn't go insane and goes around the house chasing his family. This movie is sometimes stupid, and exaggerated.
In this movie they missed a lot of Parts. I suggest they should name it with a different title cause they're only using the surroundings of the house. However, the beginning of the movie where Ronnie was killing his family was a good start. Based on what really happend.

They missed the preist blessing the house at the start and becoming sick later on.

They didn't show how Kathy Lutz always felt a strange presence in the Kitchen or the odours that reeked through the house!

The Room in the basement was supposed to be RED on all the walls.

THe dog, Harry, Wasn't supposed to be killed.

The white hooded deamon figure in the fire that showed at the end wasn't there. The kids described him as a monster.

Nothing appeared in the toilets, there were supposed to be black stains.

THe GReen slime that was covering some of the walls wasn't there.

Kathy's Brother and how he lost his money.

George's Friend and his Gf when she sensed the things in the house and the sewing room.

The Flies at the windows.

IT was supposed to be snowing outside and the river should have been Frozen.

The window that closed on Kathy's older sons hands and how his fingers became flat.

The constant conversations of Kathy's daughter with Jodie the pig.

The marks of the pigs footmark in the snow.

The marching of the musicians and the parade at night that George heard.

Kathy was possesed and she looked as an old women. She floated in the air while sleeping.

The interuptions between George and the Priest on the phone.

The upside down crucifix in the closet.

The cold temp all around the house that george felt.

Also, there should be more clearer information on how this house became possesed. Information about the burials and the history of the house.

SO THERE ARE SOOOOOO MANY PARTS MISSING AND ITS DIFFERENT. I wonder why they called it Amytiville horror??,, But if u like watching a good horror movie this would give u a lil scare.. i enjoyed it :]
I hope they would make a proper remake of the movie someday, based on this story.
