Movie Reviews of The Alamo

Movie Review: Another John Wayne Classic
Summary: 5 Stars

If you want to learn about the events surrounding the demise of the Alamo, get this movie. John Wayne is superb, and his supporting cast is magnificent.

Movie Review: Campy Spectacle
Summary: 3 Stars

This is the film that helped hook a generation of young boys on the whole topic of the Alamo. Is the film historically accurate? Other than the set, not very. Is the dialogue good? Most of it is stilted and/or silly. How about the acting? Uneven. Laurence Harvey is good as Travis, but starts out with a US Southern accent then reverts to his native British -- I guess once he figured out that his Director/Producer/Lead role John Wayne (Crockett) didn't notice or didn't care.
Still, despite all the flaws, this film can be campy fun if you accept it for what it is. So what if the splashy Mexican uniforms aren't quite accurate: They're beautiful on film. The cinematography is gorgeous. The battle scenes are old-fashioned Hollywood spectacles with swarms of extras -- no digital fudging here. Many reviewers have rightly mentioned the music.
For a March 6th "Alamo film experience" I suggest screening this along with the new "Touchstone" Alamo (which is more accurate but less fun) and the old Fess Parker "Disney" Crockett series. Make sure you have appropriate beverages and food. And if you want the "true" story of the Alamo, read a few books on the topic.

Movie Review: More fiction than fact,
Summary: 4 Stars

Hollywood over the years has taken historic accouts and changed them in order to entertain their audience. This movie is no exception. I can remember as a grade school kid watching this epic and enjoying the movie for the wrong reasons.
I remember watching the battle scenes and rooting for the Texans as they are slaughtered by Santa Ana
There are many liberties taken with this movie. It shows Santa Ana as being gallant instead of the barbarian he really was.
Santa Ana executed prisoners under the white flag of truce at Goliad and after the battle of the Alamo.
This movie is pure Hollywood with Travis drawing the line in the sand and all. We will never know if the line was actually drawn, but it does make a nice scene for the movie. What the movie does portay is the brave men who fought for a cause they believed in.
If you want a more historical account then see the more recent version, released in 2004. This movie is very entertaining though.

Movie Review: Behind the Adobe Walls.
Summary: 5 Stars

"The Alamo" (1960) is a typical product of its times and John Wayne's cherished personal project.
The Duke has performed in countless films fleshing the "Far West Hero" till he transformed that character in his own "acting trade mark". So it is not great surprise that the Alamo's epic fascinated him.
Wayne was director, producer and actor in this film and he succeeds delivering a high class product of the genre.

The story is well known and was a perfect raw material for Wayne's ethos: a small bunch of tough frontier men resisting the overwhelming assault of their foe. They will sacrifice all to win time for their cause, just as Leonidas at the Thermopiles; and just as the Spartans they will leave an unforgettable mark in History.

The cast is outstanding: an inspired Richard Widmark as Jim Bowie, Wayne giving one of his top notch performances as David Crockett and Laurence Harvey as Colonel Travis, head the company.
The battle scenes are spectacular the deployment and charge of the Mexican army, with their fancy uniforms, produce a great visual impact.
Dimitri Tiomkin's musical score and Paul Webster's "The Green Leaves of Summer" remain as one of the best of all times.

A great film that we'll be enjoyed by Wayne's, Western, Historical and Action movies buffs!
