Movie Reviews of The AlamoMovie Review: Fun to watch Summary: 5 Stars
There are histories and histories. Until recent time's history was told by the winner and we could not help but adjust it to make it more interesting. Well this is one of those movies that will not let the facts stand in the way of a good story, a colorful story, one that you can still root for the good guys and maybe feel a little sad if they happen to lose.
We all know the story of a hand full of Texans holding off General Santa Anna and the Mexican army in 1836.
All your favorite actors play all your favorite characters which include John Wayne fun to watch as Davy Crockett, Richard Widmark as Jim Bowie, and Laurence Harvey as William Barrett Travis. Their fait is dependent on each other, as apposed to a particular hero. The film is made in Bracketivlle Texas, which gives it a feeling of reality.
You may see a strange parallel between the Alamo scenario where a hand full of people (knowing they were doomed) hold on as long as they can to slow down the pace if the Mexican army. And the Tolkien tale of Middle earth where the elves knowing they were doomed fight and resist to the end.
Order your version of this film with caution as there are many different cuts and enhancements.
Be sure to watch the retaking of the Alamo in the movie "Viva Max." (1969) with Peter Ustinov.
Movie Review: John Wayne shoulda got a Best Director Oscar Summary: 5 Stars
John Wayne's version of The Alamo is one of my favorite Alamo movies, next to the recent epic blockbuster The Alamo with Billy Bob Thornton as Davy Crockett, Jason Patric as James Bowie, Patrick Wilson as Col. William B. Travis, and Dennis Quaid as General Sam Houston. John Wayne wanted to tell the story of the famous battle at the Alamo and it's sacrifice, but he couldn't do it because the movie studio, Republic Pictures, the one he was under contract with, said he could only act in it and not direct it or he could direct it and not act in it. So Wayne decided to strike out on his own to make his picture, he selected the principal actors and the extras, he built his own set of the Alamo mission and it's inner courtyard and the town of San Antonio de Bexar, and most of the money that Wayne spent on the movie came from his own pocket. I mean, John Wayne wanted to make The Alamo and he did, I personally think that he should have been nominated and perhaps, awarded a Best Director Oscar for his direction of The Alamo. I have the DVD version of this movie, but the one I have is the one with John Wayne standing in front of the Alamo holding his rifle on his shoulder, I don't this version yet. John Wayne: Best Director: The Alamo
Movie Review: Very inspiring and very entertaining Summary: 5 Stars
It's 1836, and General Sam Houston (played by Richard Boone) is preparing to defend Texas's independence from the new Mexican President, Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna. He needs Colonel Travis (Laurence Harvey) and Jim Bowie (Richard Widmark) to buy him the time he needs to organize his army. And so, joined by American legend Davie Crockett (John Wayne) and a group of about 30 Tennesseans, the men make their stand at the Alamo mission, on the San Antonio River. This is the story of the great stand at the Alamo, where a small group of men stood against overwhelming odds for thirteen days.
This is a great movie, very inspiring and very entertaining. This 1960 production has come under considerable criticism for the liberties it takes with the historical record of the battle, but nonetheless it really is a movie worth seeing. Unlike the IMAX movie, Alamo: The Price of Freedom, that I saw down in San Antonio, this big-budget extravaganza features a large and impressive Mexican Army, and better character development.
My fifteen-year-old son and I really enjoyed this movie, with all of its action and daring-do. We both give it a big thumb's up!
Movie Review: For God and For Texas Summary: 5 Stars
Thank God for someone like John Wayne to leave us this masterpiece. The Alamo is by far the greatest film ever made concerning those 13 days. What more can I say ? This story isn't about theory, it is simply the story about men who had their backs against the wall, who refused to lay down and die like many of us do in real everyday life. I am honored that such a film was ever made, and to have absorbed the values that it offered. For me, the values that this film offered were: Courage, honor, commitment, discipline, and a willingness to stand or fall, if need be,for what you believe in. I have scaled the highest of mountains because of this film, and I certainly will never go gently into the night regardless of the adversity I may face. To accept your fate even if it means going to certain death is not something many of us are willing to do, but Texians and Tejanos during the Texas Revolution were willing to do just that. I will always ask the question...what is the measure of your resolve ? For God and For Texas....
Movie Review: The Alamo Summary: 5 Stars
John Wayne produces, directs and stars in this bigger than life chronicle of one of the most remarkable events in American history. At the alamo a crumbling adobe mission 185 exceptional men joined together in a sacred pact:They would stand firm against an army of 7,000 and willingly give their lives for freedom.
Filmed entirely in Texas, only a few miles from the site of the actual battle,The alamo is a visually stunning and historically accurate celebration of courage and honor. Co-starring Richard Widmark,Laurence Harvey and Chill Wills, and garnering seven Oscar nominations,it is an emotion-charged brilliantly pictured telling of this famed story.
