Movie Reviews of The Air I Breathe

Movie Review: Smart pretentious mess
Summary: 4 Stars

What a magnificent cast: Whitaker (great here!), Bacon (bland), Garcia (diabolical), Fraser (brooding), Hirsch (crazy), Delpy (absent)... Even SM Gellar turns out to be a decent actress when not chasing monsters.
And what an uneven, messy and yet intelligent film. The right one for a slightly soaked philosophical late night. Pretentious existentialist brooding: what does it all mean?

4 interrelated crime episodes: Happiness (Whitaker), Pleasure (Fraser), Sorrow (Gellar) and Love (Bacon), connected by common denominator Garcia as evil incarnated, the loan shark, horse race manipulator, protection racketeer, show biz bulldozer.

Whitaker's is the most solid stand- alone story: the unsatisfied bank clerk who takes a risk and has his life run away with him into scenarios that he would never dream of.
Fraser is the main philosopher around, involved in 3 of the 4 episodes. He is the psychic strong arm of the bad guys, who has a distaste for his chosen profession. As long as he can see the future, if only for a short span, he never loses a fight. But happiness, if short lived, comes only with the loss of special talents... Pretentious, isn't it.

Don't watch it when you are entirely sober or when you expect something that makes complete sense. On other days, it is splendid entertainment.

Movie Review: The four equivalent angles of a tetrahedron!
Summary: 4 Stars

The squares of the life of an ancient Chinese proverb are the happiness, the pleasure, the forgiveness and the love. Well, this script deals marvelously with these four issues and intermingles them into a well rounded story.

An actress (Sarah Michelle Gellar) chased by a gangster (Andy Garcia, who reminds us so much his role as Vincent Corleone in Godfather III) a ruthless assistant Brendan Fraser) who has fallen in love with her; a distinguished medic (the lovely July Delpi, the beloved actress of Kieslowski)specialized in discovering an antidote for a poisonous specie and a timeless and devoted Doctor, who has always loved her (Kevin Bacon) and a humble and overlooked employer who has lived according the rules and one day decides to break the rules (Forrest Whitaker) make a fabulous team who will impress the movie of high caliber tension from start to end.

Obviously, nobody can deny the visible influence of this move exerted by "Crash" and"11:14". Nevertheless, the motion picture acquires a relevant status and proper existence due its well coherent script.

A must-see.

Movie Review: Nice to see Fraser diversify...
Summary: 4 Stars

This film has been on my recommendation list for customers that ask for that "I want to think a little bit tonight" movie and not have it be "dumb or condescending".

The four story lines here are dissected repeatedly by reviewers, and I have to agree with the supporters on descriptions and emotional impacts. Watching the DVD docu and listening to the commentaries gave some nice film making insight. Shows how one can make a good film on a tight budget with a rookie director and a great cast.

Some nice music from the Teddybears and thoughtful prop management on making the city look American (as most of it was not filmed here). The performance by Fraser was out of his norm and provides a nice break from the Mummy/JTTCOTE rush right now. Kelly Hu stepped in for a brief but beautiful showing. Not quite sure what "originality", "stereotypes" and "plot holes" so many people are picking this apart for - but I feel it is a worthwhile watch for the actor's fans that follow their lesser-known roles.

Movie Review: Stunning Brainbender
Summary: 4 Stars

This movie was nothing of what I expected to come from the all-star cast and crew, but it wound up being a brilliant piece of well-crafted film. The story takes you on separate but related journeys between various characters, and ties them all together in an interesting way. This movie is incredibly emotional and will take you on a roller coaster ride from shocked to angry to laughing to (a whole lot of) sadness. The cast and acting are amazing, and it's not every day you get to see big name actors like this portraying realistically normal people. I would say that foremost, this is a movie about the harsh reality of the real world, it's not a candy-coated Hollywood jewel that will make you feel good. In the end you're not going to be happy or uplifted or well-entertained, but maybe you'll have a more realistic outlook on life and learn a few things. ;)

Movie Review: Hmm. Captivating, a little slow, but I was pulled in!
Summary: 4 Stars

This movie is a little slow at first, but the characters are good, and most feel real. I found myself pulled in. I was watching this movie, kinda went 'hmm. interesting. not sure if im liking this or not...i think i do.' and by the end it was 'actually, i really like this movie. A Lot.' I don't buy a lot of movies- usually only ones im gonna watch repeatedly, you know? well i bought this one. It could have done without some of the stripper/nudity scenes, i thought it wasnt needed, but whatever; idk, that kid kinda irritated me. I guess he's supposed to. But I love the SMG/Fraser/Garcia line. Very good I think.
