Movie Reviews of The Adventures of Indiana Jones: The Complete DVD Movie Collection (Full Screen Edition)Movie Review: The Ultimate Movie Experience! Summary: 5 Stars
RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK (1981)In 1977, following the release of CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND, Steven Spielberg was vacationing in Hawaii with his friend George Lucas, who had just broke the record for the highest-grossing movie of all-time with STAR WARS. Steven expressed his desire to direct a James Bond movie. Lucas told him not-to-bother with the Bond franchise and that he had a better project: Indiana Jones. Spielberg loved the idea and agreed to direct the movie and Lucas would produce it. They hired Lawrance Kasdan to write the script of Indiana Jones. In 1979, Steven Spielberg released "1941", who failed at the box-office and George Lucas was producing THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK when the script for Indiana Jones was finally finished. It was called RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK, Spielberg and Lucas both loved it and they took the script to many studios who passed on it. It was Paramount Pictures who took the risk of financing such a big project. The movie was given a $22 million budget and casting began. At first, it was Tom Selleck who was given the lead part of Indiana Jones, but the pilot he had shot for CBS was picked up and he had to retire from the project to make the TV show MAGNUM P.I.Steven Spielberg and George Lucas then hired Harrison Ford, who already knew George Lucas from the STAR WARS movies. They hired Kate Capshaw to play the lead female role and production began on RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK in the summer of 1980. The movie was very difficult to make, but they got it make and the studios loved it. RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK was released on June 12th, 1981 and grossed $242 million domestically, becoming the biggest hit of 1981. Not only it launched the career of Harrison Ford who prooved that he could do something more than STAR WARS and it put Steven Spielberg back on the hot directors list that he had left since the release of "1941". Spielberg and Lucas then agreed to make two sequels to RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK whenever they would have time. INDIANA JONES AND THE TEMPLE OF DOOM (1984) The first Indiana Jones movie called RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK was a $242 million box-office hit, so it was almost certain that Spielberg and Lucas would make a sequel. After the gigantic success of E.T.THE EXTRA-TERRESTRIAL in 1982, Steven Spielberg started to work on the Indiana Jones sequel that would be more darker and violent than the first movie. Harrison Ford was re-hired as Indiana Jones and so as Kate Capshaw for the lead- female role. George Lucas finished producing RETURN OF THE JEDI and in the summer of 1983, they all got back together to make a sequel. The movie was called INDIANA JONES AND THE TEMPLE OF DOOM and people were expecting a lot from this movie especially Paramount Pictures. When INDIANA JONES AND THE TEMPLE OF DOOM was released on May 23rd, 1984, some critics were disappointment of the movie saying that it was too dark and violent. Steven Spielberg fought with the MPAA who wanted to give the movie an R-rating, but Spielberg and Lucas didn't give up and finally they got a PG-13 rating. INDIANA JONES AND THE TEMPLE OF DOOM grossed $179,9 million at the box-office, it was less than RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK. Spielberg who defended his movie at first, finally apologized for the violence and told the parents not-to-bring kids under 10 years old. Although it was a good sequel, it didn't beat RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK. INDIANA JONES AND THE LAST CRUSADE (1989) After the release and bad reviews of INDIANA JONES AND THE TEMPLE OF DOOM in 1984, Spielberg and Lucas waited a couple of years to release the third and final installment of the Indiana Jones trilogy. Spielberg directed two movies: THE COLOR PURPLE in 1985 and EMPIRE OF THE SUN in 1987. This movie would have to be better than the second installment or the movie would fail. So, Steven and George fot back to the old recipe of RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK, which was mixing comedy with action. They re-hired Harrison Ford as Indiana Jones and they hired Sean Connery as Indy's father. The movie was given a $37 million budget and production started on INDIANA JONES AND THE LAST CRUSADE in the summer of 1988. The movie was release on May 24th, 1989 to great reviews and $197,2 million at the box-office. The trilogy was complete and in 2004, production for Indiana Jones 4 is to begin. The DVD collection is a must-have collection for everyone.
