Movie Reviews of The Adventures of Baron Munchausen [Blu-ray]Movie Review: The Terry Gilliam Fantasy Trilogy Goes out with a Bang! Summary: 5 Stars
In the 19th century, it seems a small town has been invaded by murderous Turks as the town's only hope is an aristocratic old traveler named Baron Karl Fredrick Munchausen (John Neville) as he travels with the help of a young girl named Sally (Sarah Polly) and a speedy bumbler named Berthold (Eric Idle in two roles) as they go off to find some crew members to help him save the town as they travel from the moon, meeting bizarre creatures to all the way inside the stomach of a Monstro-esque giant fish.
Brilliant comedy-fantasy adventure from Terry Gilliam is the last of the major fantasy trilogy that began with "Time Bandits" in 1981 then became better with 1985's dark "Brazil" and finally this movie as it went out with a bang. The film co-stars Uma Thurman, Jonathan Pryce, Robin Williams and Oliver Reed, it's a unique and hilarious Monty Python-esque cartoonish adventure brought to life thanks to the unique imagination of Monty Python member who co-wrote along with "Brazil" writer Charles McKeowen and it's a pure work of art. The performances are quite superb, Brazil's Michael Kamen does the wonderous score and so are Richard Conway's special effects such as the memorable scene where Munchausen dances with Venus, this movie is not for everyone or tastes but it's a must see who loves his films and who enjoys a good fantasy movie.
This Blu-Ray offers this masterpiece the look and sound it needed in great high def. The Extras are great like the BD exclusive map of Baron Munchausen's world with Trivia and extras like 3 part documentary, Storyboard sequences, audio commentary and deleted scenes.

Summary of The Adventures of Baron Munchausen [Blu-ray]Director Terry Gilliam (Brazil) and an all-star cast including John Neville, Eric Idle, Oliver Reedand Uma Thurman deliver this tale of the enchanting adventures of Baron von Munchausen on his journey to save a town from defeat. Being swallowed by a giant sea-monster, a trip to the moon, a dance with Venus and an escape from the Grim Reaper are only some of the improbable adventures. Monty Python's Terry Gilliam (Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas) directs this wild, wild version of the stories of Baron Munchausen, pushing the limits of 1989 special effects technology to bring us such sights as a horse divided in half and running around in two parts, and a giant Robin Williams with his head flying off his shoulders. Basically, this is a treat for Gilliam fans, as the sustaining idea of the film runs out of steam, and manic energy alone keeps the momentum going. Casual viewers might find it tedious after awhile. There are nice parts for fellow Python Eric Idle, as well as Sting, Alison Steadman, and Uma Thurman as a dazzlingly beautiful Venus on a half-shell. Gilliam had greater artistic and commercial success with Brazil, The Fisher King, and 12 Monkeys. --Tom Keogh
