Movie Reviews of The Abominable Dr. PhibesMovie Review: Smart, stylish, and horrifyingly fun Summary: 5 Stars
Dr. Phibes, holder of degrees in musicology and theology has chosen to bring the plagues of the Pharoahs upon the men and woman he deems responsible for his wife, Victoria's, death, in the order they occured in Exodus. There is the curse of boils, of blood, of frogs, of lice, of beasts, of flies of rats, of locusts, the death of the first born, and the curse of darkness. Dr. Phibes brings about each in a deliciously macabre way. Will Phibes be caught? Do we want him caught?
Dr. Phibes not only has an entertaining plot (if not terribly deep), it has style and ingenuity that goes beyond his methods of killing. The surreal sets (the work of Brian Eatwell, who also worked on Dr. Phibes Rises Again) create an art deco cabaret that serves as Dr. Phibes's lair. Phibes's methods of overcoming the damage done by his accident are ingenious, from his prosthetic face, to the port in his neck, to the never-seen eating port at the back of his head. Dr. Phibes has smarts and style, and is a singularly delightful villain who no one (except the police) want to see fail.
Movie Review: A disturbingly different horror movie Summary: 5 Stars
When doctors begin dying in bizarre and horrifying ways, Inspector Trout (played by Peter Jeffrey) cannot begin to imagine what is going on. But, when he finds out that all of the doctors worked together successfully on the case of Victoria Phibes, he begins to have his suspicions. Victoria's husband, Dr. Anton Phibes (Vincent Price) is seeking vengeance for his wife's death, and this is a dish that he serves up cold indeed!
This 1971 movie is very hard to describe. At first glance, it appears campy and low-budget to the point of ridiculousness. However, what it actually maintains is a disturbing surreality that turns potential humor into actual horror. Also, Vincent Price puts in a stellar performance, making Phibes seem like the one terrifying reality in all of the brightly-colored surreality.
So, if you want to see a disturbingly different horror movie, one that is horrifying even when you don't think it should be, then get this movie. I highly recommend it. NOTE: Not for children!
Movie Review: "Revenge is the Best Medicine..." Summary: 5 Stars
OK, I'm on a kick now. After reviewing The Gorgon, I just had to give some props to the immortal Vincent Price. This terrifying thriller was actually Vincent Price's 100th movie! A sad, chilling tale of a concert musician's wife who falls prey to a botched surgery, Phibes takes his revenge on the medical team responsible for her demise. He then unleashes a wave of atrocities in true fashion of the plagues of the Old Testament. From locusts, to rats, to a brilliant twisted climax that was unsurpassed for the era.(1971) The cinematography is cheesy and dated, maybe even a little psychadelic, but it just adds to how well done this eerie horror classic is. And silent and sexy Virginia North as 'Vulnavia' is a tasty addition to the story. This was another great chiller from Vincent Price, and another fond memory from the 'early days' of horror.
Movie Review: Vincent Price plays Vincent Price! Summary: 5 Stars
For what it is intended to be, this is a GREAT movie. This is meant to be an over the top movie and Vincent Price pulls it off perfectly. This is not just Vincent Price playing Anton Phibes, this is Vincent Price playing Vincent Price playing Anton Phibes. He intentionally overacts and hams up the mannerisms he made famous in so many of his other classics. He must have had a world of fun doing this.Don't get all wrapped around the minute details of the plot. This is not that kind of movie. This is dark comedy par excellance. It's amazing, you take real guilty pleasure in the evil the bad guy will do next. If you've seen other Vincent Price movies (even if you haven't, but especially if you have) this, and its sequel are not to be missed.
Movie Review: love means never having to say you're ugly Summary: 5 Stars
i love this movie, the whole killing in the name of love thing is kind of romantic and vincent price's monologues are cool. sometimes the murders aren't as great as you would expect like death by rats, but the locusts and frogs are fun and ridiculous. i'm keepin this short cause im 17 and don't like to write a lot,but this is a great movie if you're a sucker for old horror movies like i am and you want something that moves a little faster than most 1970s cinema.Listen to the cureand if you're ever in virginia check out sequoia.
