Movie Reviews of The Abandoned

Movie Review: There Is A Reason Why This Is Titled The Abandoned
Summary: 5 Stars

There is a reason why this movie is titled The Abandoned and my guess would be that this movie project languished, abandoned at the bottom of the pile for forty two years, until someone came up with the "eight movies to die for" marketing scheme.

The plot of The Abandoned does not develop past set up, so be warned that if you read my description of the plot, you're going to know 90 percent of the film.

An American adopted Russian returns to her homeland after learning she has inherited a farm. She doesn't really plan on farming, but for some reason returning to the farm will help her make sense of her life. And in case you didn't know, making sense of life is a favourite baby boomer past time-one boomers will pursue to any lengths, even death. Making sense of life is right up there with learning about healing crystals and navel gazing.

Shortly after arriving on the farm, our heroine discovers a doppleganger zombie following her around. But this doppleganger isn't exactly like her-it has white contacts over it's eyes and wet hair! Another man shows up on the farm who turns out to be our heroines twin brother and he has a doppleganger zombie following him around too. The zombie dopplegangers don't do a lot-just sort of stalk from afar. The twins try to shoot them and discover when they shoot the dopplegangers, they also end up shot. This propagates the crux of the film-"whatever happens to them, happens to us".

It turns out that the twins father murdered their mother, but in another scene in the movie, the mother murders the father when he tries to murder the twins. Honestly, none of it makes sense. In the end one twin ends up being eaten by a hog and his doppleganger is eaten too. The other twin drives off a bridge and her doppleganger just sort of disappears..."whatever happens to them happens to us." These characters could have just as easily turned into lollipops and it would have done about as much for the plot as being eaten by a hog. In the end, whatever happened did not to matter one fig in providing an explanation for the viewer. It's a great set up that goes nowhere.

There are some major plot holes here-like the fact that in the 1960's Russia was still behind the iron curtain and american adoptions were not happening. In fact, they were paying women to have kids. They were not sending future workers of communism overseas.

There is some good scenery in this film and you will be scared by some fairly creepy stuff while waiting for the plot to unfold. But after about an hour you'll just get bored with waiting for the plot to move and you'll want this film to end.
