Movie Review: Excellent, Classic film
Summary: 4 Stars
I first saw this movie on TV in the 70's. I still remember it well. The story is a highlight of classical history, yet seldom heard. This is a very well done movie with excellent casting, acting, screenwriting and cinematography.
I also saw the new recent version, entitled "300", which was also excellent and more stylish, but this original version with Richard Egan and Diane Baker is good movie making.
For older adults, I'd recommend this version over the new one; though both are excellent and faithful to the story.

Good little 60's mini epic. While not as grand as El Cid or Spartacus, this is a decent and often under appreciated film. For the younger movie viewer who has seen Frank Miller's 300, you will laugh at the not so bloody battle scenes and special effects. But for the times, it was as bloody as they would allow and this is the time of no CGI. This version of 300 is more historically accurate than the modern film, though a proper Greek phalanx would be a tight line of men many rows deep. I enjoyed this movie and have watched it several times. Quite a bit of the dialogue is lifted directly from Herodotus' account of the event.
The only drawback is some of the wooden acting from the "Spartan" spy and the sappy dialogue between a young Spartan and his girlfriend. If they could edit out the scenes between those two, the movie would be far better.
Other than that it's definately fun and worth watching!

One of the movies that I remember fondly from my childhood, when I saw it again, after 30+ years, it was still powerful, but very dated, the acting is somewhat wooden, and the historical accuracy is not what it should be. This is a really great classic movie. Fight scenes with out gore and blood and some pretty good acting as well. The requiste love story to go along is pretty good as well. If only Brad could have acted this well in Troy.
