Movie Reviews of That Touch of MinkMovie Review: Not bad, but not as good as the Hudson/Day/Randall comedies Summary: 3 Stars
Watching _That Touch of Mink_ is like watching something from an alternate universe where instead of the formulaic early '60s romantic comedy where you had Rock Hudson as the desirable yet unavaliable bachelor, Doris Day as the perpetual virgin and Tony Randall as the neurotic and closeted best friend you had Cary Grant as the desirable yet unavailable bachelor, Doris Day as the perpetual virgin (apparently no other actress approached Doris Day's iconic status as a virgin) and Gig Young as the neurotic and closeted best friend. Talk about "through a glass darkly"!. All of this is very cute but the problem with Grant and Young is that they can't pull off the Rock Hudson/Tony Randall dynamic. Hudson had a boyish charm that Grant, a more substantial actor, didn't, and the dynamic between Hudson and Randall is a lot more playful than the one between Grant and Young, and of course when it came to playing neurotic closetcases no one can even hold a candle to Tony Randall. I mean really, if they had ever had an Academy Award for "Best Portrayal of a Neurotic Closetcase" they would have awarded it once, in 1961 for _Lover Come Back_ and then retired it forever. Doris Day is of course virginal, amazing that someone with so little talent was able to make such a career out of the supposed possession of a hymen. You might dispute as to whether or not virginity is a good thing but regardless of your opinion you have to admire Day for making so much out of hers.
Movie Review: A Middle-Aged Guy, A Young Girl: Hollywood's Idea of Romance Summary: 3 Stars
I've seen this movie a couple of times, but have to admit it's always been a yawn for me. Grant, in my opinion, was showing his age, and -- for a young woman intent on protecting her virginity -- so was Day.
The age disparity between the two actors isn't as obvious as it was with such pairings as Gable/Monroe, Gable/Day, Grant/Caron, Crosby/Kelly, etc., and the worst example, a haggard Cooper with a luminous Audrey Hepburn. But it's still there. And I didn't think there was much chemistry between the two. In Grant's best romantic stuff from the Fifties on, I think he was best paired with women who came across as smart, sophisticated...and who could play with Grant the sexual flirtation games with knowing amusement. I'm recalling Kelly, Bergman, Hepburn, Saint, even Brigitte Auber. That style was never Day's.
In my view, the movie isn't a bust, but it's not a winner, either.
Movie Review: Great Movie - Poor Quality Artisan DVD release!!!! Summary: 3 Stars
Now that DVD's have been around for several years and people have Home Theatres etc, SHAME ON ARTISAN for releasing such a poor quality DVD!!!! If this was digitally remastered (as stated)it was poorly executed.Note: the DVD suggests this is a WIDESCREEN movie presentation NOT!! In fact this DVD is a STANDARD FORMAT picture (TV size) with true LETTERBOX limitations (Black horizontal & vertical bars). What this means is a very small picture centered in a Standard or WIDESCREEN television. CAUTION: Artisan is notorious for releasing these false formats. CONSUMER BEWARE: The only true WideScreen format is Anamorphic WideScreen (automatically adjusts to television screen size), Enhanced for WideScreens or Enhanced for 16:9 Televisions. This movie is a cute movie with Doris Day & Cary Grant but be cautious or skip DVD's by Artisan. Only Extra - the trailer. Enjoy something else!
Movie Review: Weird Movie Summary: 3 Stars
This movie was made in 1962, but the whole style is basically 50s, Doris Day looks like my grandmother in it. The whole plot is kind of weird, watch it yourself, but don't expect anything great really. Just some sugarcoated 50s Hollywood romance with two aging protagonists and 1950s sexual mores. Basically the rich guy (Cary Grant, who else) meeting the country wench kind of thing. For a better movie with Grant I would recommend "House Boat", Sophia Loren is much better than Doris Day anyhow.
Movie Review: Wait for a better remastering by a better publisher Summary: 2 Stars
I won't go into the plot of the movie. Most reviewers do that without commenting on the quality of the video itself. I've always loved the movie and jumped at the chance to get the DVD. It was widescreen, but I knew it wasn't anamorphic, so there were no surprises there, just disappointed that this is how it was made. The biggest problem came when I started the movie. Immediately, I noticed that the video seemed to go in and out of focus constantly and the screen seemed to jitter occassionally. The picture is grainy and not clear at all. Overall, the movie is not fit to watch. I tried to take it back to Wal-Mart (who puts customer satisfaction first?????). I was told without hesitation that I could not return an opened DVD. I told them it was defective. There still refused, blaming the copyright law. That makes me think. It seems that the video production companies pushed copyright legislation through and then use it as a means to produce crap like this, knowing you have no recourse; you're just stuck with it. My advice is to stay away from this movie until a company other than Artisan puts is out.
