Movie Reviews of That Girl - Season One

Movie Review: A WOMAN who was a TRAILBLAZER!
Summary: 5 Stars

In an era of television that had only previously seen scatterbrained housewives, desperate man-chasing chorus girls or women with no real humor at all, the dawn of a new era came with Marlo Thomas as That Girl!

She was a girl who had finished school, moved out of her parents' house and headed for the big city to establish herself as a professional actress! Let us never forget that if it wasn't for this ground-breaking Marlo Thomas show, there would have been no Mary Tyler Moore at WGM, she would still be married to Rob (or some other comedian) and stuck in the world of the sit-com kitchen. Everything that modern women know about the roles of women seen on television comedies was darkness before this show came along.

That Girl - Season One is a DVD set that belongs in your collection. It's not just hilarious, it's a wonderful piece of women's herstory.

Movie Review: A lot of fun and a time trip in the bargain
Summary: 5 Stars

Marlo Thomas is a charmer in this series, which felt confident and happy from the beginning. She was the first modern woman (AKA "girl") who put career first in a romantic sitcom. As an aspiring actress in NYC, she has a brilliant smile, wears fabulous clothes, has a neato apartment and sweetie of a boyfriend, and exhibits spunkiness and kindness in every show. You feel like you'd love to have a friend like That Girl. Great fun, sometimes funny, and always interesting to see the way the city and the people looked in the sixties. (Also interesting to see so many females without augmented breasts, botoxed foreheads, and bleached teeth -- so that's how our TV stars would look without modern cosmetic advances.) I enjoyed every episode, and found the background info on the series creation to be interesting, but the episode commentary offered is thin and could be skipped.

Movie Review: And the winner is...THAT GIRL
Summary: 5 Stars

If there were an award for best overall presentation of a TV show on DVD, my vote would go to That Girl. The packaging is bright, fun and lovable, just like the show. The graphics under the titles of episodes on each disc are very creative (love the images of Ann and Donald that appear when the disc is first loaded). The bonus features are generous, and the price on Amazon is reasonable. To top it all off, the announcement of the release of the second season (in Nov.) was done in a timely manner--fans don't have to wonder when and if a second season is coming. Well done, Shout Factory!

As for the show itself, the comedy is still fresh and funny with many laugh-out-loud moments. Ann Marie and Donald are adorable--you feel they really exist and I would love to have them as friends. This is a charming and wholesome show recommended for all.

Movie Review: The Best TV Show Ever!!!
Summary: 5 Stars

My father just loves to buy all kinds of TV shows and movies from the 40's to the 70's. I'm an adolesenct, so when I got Season One of That Girl for Christmas, I was a bit dissapointed. It looked corny and fake, so I didn't touch it for a while. Later, I thought, I'll watch an episode to check it out. I ended up wathching the season with my mom in three days! Marlo Thomas does a fantastic job acting and she really touches on subjects that matter. Marlo and Ted Bessell are fantastic together- it seems like they're a real couple in love!!! The bonus features have the never-before seen pilot episode and a lot of promos. I look at TV today, and you just don't find televison like that anymore. Included with the set is an episode guide too. It's a great thing to buy, especially if you have a teenage daughter, or know any girl. Be sure to get Season Two too!

Movie Review: What a breath of fresh air!!
Summary: 5 Stars

I found that this DVD set was enjoyable to watch! I thoroughly enjoyed every episode and was disappointed to get to the end of the last one. I didn't want them to end. I understand why Marlo Thomas didn't want the show to end with Ann and Don geting married but I was still wish they had. Ted Bessell was a wonderful actor/comedian who is greatly missed. Marlo Thomas and Don Hollinger had such great chemistry and were such an endearing couple. Of course the clothes and fashions were also amazing! I just sat there amazed at so many good memories of the late 60's as I watched these episodes. I enjoyed the cameo appearances by Regis Philbin (looked like a little boy), Barry Williams from the Brady Bunch and many others. This show was refreshingly wholesome that I would have no problem allowing my children or grandchildren to watch.
