Movie Reviews of That Girl - Season One

Movie Review: Before Mary Richards we had Ann Marie!!!
Summary: 5 Stars

This is by far the best release of a sitcom from the 60's I've seen yet. (Second only to the Dick Van Dyke Show) Perfectly restored episodes, guides with orignal air dates in the packaging, and plenty of extras, and a great price on top of that make this a bargain for any fan of "That Girl".

The situations are as funny as they've ever been. My wife was never a fan of the show, but she watched a couple episodes with me and was laughing out loud.

The extras include an interview with Marlo about the creation of the show. There is also a short with much of the outdoor shots taken in New York that were woven into the episodes with commentary on how they did that. On top of that, they include the never-aired pilot!!!

The packaging is bright and colorful and of similar quaility to the "Everybody Loves Raymond" sets.

If you were ever a fan of this show, you will not be disappointed with this set, and Amazon has the best price by far.

Movie Review: Refreshing
Summary: 5 Stars

Who can say anything bad about sweet Ann Marie, the best thing since Lucy Ricardo? This entire series proved Marlo Thomas could act, (better even than her father), while maintaining the innocence of the standards of that time, That Girl did manage to broach some controversial subjects. This was the first time a single girl was portrayed on TV as a viable life choice. I think Mary Tyler Moore watched this and based her own show on it. Besides, LOL, I was a young male when this show was on, it was really (deleted), LOL.

For me and my older brother, the only other actress on TV at the time that beat Marlo was the magnificent Elizabeth Montgomery, in Bewitched. Sorry, that's puberty! These many years later, That Girl still stands out as a great show. I bought this wondering if I'd like it as much now, as I did when it was first on TV, I do. Ditto for the other actors on the show, they don't make shows this good anymore. Buy it, I bought four seasons so far.

Movie Review: That Girl Marlo
Summary: 5 Stars

Beautiful Marlo Thomas ranks among the most delightful sitcom heroines of all time - she was consistently nominated for the Best Comedy Actress Emmy honor for this series and should have won at least once. I loved this program growing up mainly because Marlo is so appealing in the part as the aspiring actress who can't seem to get a major break. THAT GIRL was one of ABC's few major hits during the 1960's, there were far fewer ABC stations at the time and the best programs from the network were often picked up by NBC or CBS stations and shown in their non-network time slots, this is how I saw the show when I was young. As I grew up and became a fan of old movies, I could see the influence of the classic romantic comedies of Claudette Colbert and Carole Lombard on this show and of course THAT GIRL was a pioneer TV program with a "working girl" heroine. I cannot wait to get this DVD set and hear Marlo gasp once again in her slightly raspy voice "Oh, Donald!"

Movie Review: FINALLY on DVD!!!!
Summary: 5 Stars

"That Girl" was one of my favorite shows in the 60's. I was VERY anxious to buy this set as I was curious to see how the episodes have held up after 40 years!!! Wow--can you believe it??? 40 years! I'm very pleased to say--they have. :) I'm only starting my 3rd disc but I could tell after a few shows--I was going to love this collection. :) Very attractive packaging--WAY TOO CUTE!!!

Love seeing all the guest stars and regulars that went on to other things (Dabney Coleman, George Carlin, Sally Kellerman etc.).

In watching the shows, I'm really pleased with the high standards the characters have. No cheap shots. No degrading and embarrassing episodes. All these people you would love to have as your neighbors! :) Marlo Thomas is THE MOST!!! She plays Ann Marie to a T! Every scene she is in is delightful. I think I spend each episode smiling from start to finish.

Movie Review: Yippee!
Summary: 5 Stars

I am so glad "That Girl" has been released on DVD. I have been waiting for a long time.

I have viewed all 5 discs including the special features and the commentaries. My only disappointment is that during the commentaries, Mr. Persky would start to tell a story and then Ms. Thomas interrupted and they never returned to the story Mr. Persky started to tell. This happened only twice. Also, Mr. Persky and Ms. Thomas seemed to enjoy viewing the episodes themselves and some of the commentary is minimal.

Other than this, the "That Girl" DVD set is great and I highly recommend it. It includes 30 episodes! As an adult, I really appreciate the chemistry between Mr. Bessell and Ms. Thomas as well as the big contribution Mr. Bessell made to the series. He was a fine actor. The packaging is also beautiful and I can't wait for the remaining seasons to be released.
