Movie Reviews of That's EntertainmentMovie Review: Lots To Like In Two Hours Of MGM Highlights Summary: 5 Stars
This got big notice when it came out in the mid '70s. With the advent of VHS, you could provide the public with something like this: a collection of great song-and-dance scenes from classic films.
In this edition (there were two more to come), we see highlights of MGM musicals from the 1920s through the 1960s. Most of them were the '30s through the '50s....and it's on a DVD!
MGM had many of the musical stars but not all, so you don't get Shirley Temple, Ruby Keeler, Dick Powell, Julie Andrews and others. However, you do get a ton of great performers like Fred Astaire, Judy Garland, Gene Kelly, Frank Sinatra, Mickey Rooney, Esther Williams and others. To use a cliché, this is a must-have for music fans. In addition to the above stars, who are remembered in some of their best scenes, you have the incredible sets of the Busby Berkeley movies.
At over two hours, there is a lot of great material in here.
Movie Review: For Widescreen Viewers Summary: 5 Stars
I'm a purist and love to see the productions in their original aspect ratio. Having a widescreen HDTV adds to this pleasure, but could also have made viewing "That's Entertainment" problematic because of the film's mix of clips from the pre- and post-widescreen eras. Thankfully, this DVD is anamorphic and the clips roll seamlessly from standard to wide and back again. It was a sheer pleasure to watch - not quite the same as sitting in the massive 70mm theater in which I first experienced this movie, but as good as you can get for staying at home. My only quibble is that many of the older (ca. 1930s) B&W clips are quite grainy. If it's that noticeable on my small HDTV, I'm sure the grains would have seemed huge on the big screen - yet I don't recall that being a problem. So I wonder about the quality control when they made the digital transfer. Still, that's only a minor complaint for a thoroughly enjoyable movie.
Movie Review: True Entertainment! Summary: 5 Stars
Wonderful anthology and documentary on MGM films. This movie was a originally intended as a documentary for television and after it was finished, it was so good, MGM decided to chance it as a feature film. What a wonder! The film is thrilling and exciting and tempted me to seek out any older films I could find. MGM was indeed the best and greatest of the old studios and I think the musicals have suffered in the transition of musical styles. Now I can appreciate the music and dancing better than when I was a child and enjoy them more. This movie is a great way to remember those films and a classic in itself.
Movie Review: The DVD That Made Me a Judy Garland Fan Summary: 5 Stars
I love this DVD. I have known some of the stars such as Mickey Rooney, Fred Astaire, Ann Miller, Liza Minnelli, and Gene Kelly. I was introduced to Esther Williams and Judy Garland.
Before I watched this DVD, the only thing I knew was that Judy Garland was in 'The Wizard of Oz.' After watching this DVD, hearing her voice, and seeing her major accomplishments, I became a fan. Now I have ordered some of her cds on this website.
This DVD is very entertaining! You can watch it over and over again! I recomend this DVD to everyone who loves musicals.
Movie Review: That's Entertainment Summary: 5 Stars
What makes this dizzying whirl of spectacular montages so much fun is the mix of famous sequences with colorful lesser-known bits, like Clark Gable's rendition of "Puttin' on the Ritz," Jimmy Stewart's serenade in "Easy to Love," and Jean Harlow vamping up "Reckless." Narrated by a roster of screen legends, Haley's magnificent homage to the big-budget musicals of yesteryear was a surprise box-office hit for MGM in 1974, and led to two sequels. Pure movie magic from start to finish, "That's Entertainment!" will sweep you off your feet.
