Movie Review: straight from the heartland . . . Summary: 4 Stars
Blue collar 80's hard rock veterans, Tesla, deliver a solid, no frills show that captures the spirit of the band, in this 120 minute performance recorded at the Myth nightclub, in St. Paul, Minnesota. The quintet has remained mostly intact since their 1987 debut, Mechanical Resonance. Original members Jeff Keith (vocals), Frank Hannon (guitar), Brian Wheat (bass), and Troy Luccketta (percussion), are still rocking hard, after over twenty years in the business. The newest member is guitarist Dave Rude, a talented player who seems to fit in well.
Not neatly falling into a musical category, Tesla's sound includes some hard rock, metal, blues and acoustic rock, and the band explores these areas in their live show. Tesla cranks out some heavy, gutsy rock, powered by Jeff Keith's raspy vocals. Frank Hannon impressively duplicates live, his signature solos and licks, and Mr. Rude shows what he can do as well. Tesla didn't really have commercial hits, but the song selection includes most of their well known songs like Hang Tough, Edison's Medicine, Signs, Love Song, Modern Day Cowboy, Heaven's Trail, Comin' atcha Live, Paradise, Song and Emotion, and a very cool cover of UFO's Rock Bottom.
The production quality of the DVD is very good, with ample camera coverage, and cuts that don't make you dizzy. For the most part, the focus is on the action. When someone solos, the camera stays on the player so you can see what they are playing. What a revelation! If only other concert videos would do the same. The DVD menu is pretty cool, but does take a while to load. The bonus materials are pretty lengthy, and provide a fun and interesting look at the band members, life on the road, and the fans.
Movie Review: Gettin' better Summary: 4 Stars
Well, at least we now know what happened to Tommy Skeoch; Brian "Buck" Wheat ate him and Frank Hannon had the left overs :) Kidding aside, this is a great DVD, but could have been better. Jeff Keith's voice seems really raspy these days, almost to the point of being bothersome. Plus we find out he's a Raiders fan- nuff said. The extras are ok, the boys coming across as a little dull, but hey, isn't that why we all fell in love with Tesla in the first place? I was also disappointed with the crowd response; they could have been served better recording a performance in their hometown of Sacramento. The venue seemed it was chosen for the stage size and logistics for recording the DVD. A highlight for me was RockBottom, the old UFO chestnut. But again, the crowd didn't seem into it at all (maybe they just don't remember UFO anymore). They should have done a Montrose cover instead. Set-list wise, I would have had more Mechanical Resonance. Over-all, great, but not 5 stars.
Movie Review: Great show - great band - region 1 DVD Summary: 4 Stars
The band and the show on this DVD are both great, make no mistake! All other reviewers have pointed that out, and I do not disagree at all.
Two minor drawbacks make me give it only 4 out of 5 stars:
1) contrary to the description on the amazon.com-page when I bought it, this is a region 1 DVD, which made it a bit hard for me as a european to view it. But I managed... ;-)
2) there are a couple of interview sequences in the middle of the concert film, which I find a bit annoying. Why didn't they put those in the special features section, and just leave the concert film alone to be viewed as a complete concert?
But those are minor drawbacks - if you're a fan of rock'n'roll, hard rock or anything guitar based: Don't miss out on this DVD!! Tesla ROCKS!
Movie Review: Tesla....Weathered, but still rockin'!! Summary: 4 Stars
Tesla is one of the best bands to come out of the 80's. Their first three albums are essential!! This DVD shows that they haven't lost any of there intensity, even if the years have taken a toll. With all but one of the original members, the music is as good as it was when I saw them multiple times in the late 80's and early 90's. It sounds as though lead vocalist Jeff Keith is the weak link here. Maybe it was a bad night or towards the end of the tour, but his vocals sound pretty raw. He gets it done, but I found myself thinking he must be in pain trying to get each note out. I love Tesla and always will. I just think the vocals on this DVD could be better. Cool behind the scenes special features! Glad these guys are still around.
