Movie Reviews of Tequila SunriseMovie Review: A Cali Classic Summary: 5 Stars
This is one of my favorite films, so i am biased. Nevertheless, it is a contemporary treatment of the everlasting question, so aptly posed by Arliss Howard (in an under-rated performance) that asks "What is it about High School that makes people believe they should be friends forever"?
Towne, a Hollywood and Oscar winning legend (Chinatown), presents a situation that is at once seedy, romantic, pointed and humane. There are a number of prescient lines that regular, everyday people thrust into unique situations might echo and understand. This is, in the truest sense, an American tale, complete with the California dream, moral turpitude, and earthy sensuality that is beautifully captured both from a filmed sense and from a thematic sense. We're not talking about a film that takes itself or its situation too seriously, but a film that evocatively displays the late 80's sense of personal angst and urgency directly linked to the cocaine in the plot. You have to remember, this was the time of Miami Vice, conspicuous consumption and Polo chic that led us down the sordrid path to today.
A beautiful rumor linked to this show- the Nick Frescia character (played by Kurt Russell) was based on/written for and offered to none other than Pat Rielly, then-coach of the "Showtime" Lakers.
The idea that it is too confusing is a poor argument. If it confuses you, you don't need to be writing reviews, you need to be watching Lawrence of Arabia or Fellini. This is film of its time and in its time.
Movie Review: A Robert Towne Masterpiece Summary: 5 Stars
It seems American audiences found the subtle character layering and intricate plot too much work in 1988. I have watched this movie many times and place it in my all time top 10 list. Robert Towne not only wrote a brilliant screen play, he did a great job of directing this film. While you might not think Mel Gibson, Kurt Russell, Michelle Pfeiffer and Raul Julia are the best actors of their generation, this movie is surely one of the best works in their repetoire.
Warner Brothers balked at making a film in 1988 where the hero is a single parent drug dealer trying to go straight, the villain is a narcotics police detective, and the female love interest sleeps with both characters! But the complexity of the characterization is exactly what I yearn for in movies: the ambiguity of their interactions allows us to understand something fundamental about human nature, and to fully understand the complexity of life's choices.
Still good after all these years!
Movie Review: Surrender to Me Summary: 5 Stars
Saw this movie at the theatre, beleive it or not, fell in love with this movie from the get go, what more can this movie offer you, California,Sun,Beaches,Good Food, and of course Drugs... The movie has twists and turns, it could possibly be a real life role, that of Dale M, real drug dealers during late 80's and early 90's really lived like this, not like (Scarface). LOW KEY...ON THE BEACH. Robert Towne, could not have scripted a better screenplay or story. It's a story with values, characters, friends. I can promise you, you will go to the Blockbuster store the next day and start looking up other (Towne),(Russell) (Pfeiffer) & of course (Gibson) films, and start eating at Chic Los Angeles Italian Eateries. This is an independant film , before they became popular, my hat also goes off to: Mr.Mount who brought us Dale,Nick, Joanne,Carlos, for all of us to enjoy....thanks Thom.enjoy it. jm
Movie Review: A truely great film! Summary: 5 Stars
Tequila Sunrise... one of my favorite movies, period. It was perfectly cast with Mel Gibson, Kurt Russell, Michele Pfieffer, Raul Julia, J.T. Walsh and Arlis Howard and the movie has a sexiness that is entrancing. It was beautifully shot and Michelle Pfeiffer looks absolutely amazing in it as well.
Much like R. Legendre, I too do not understand people who say that the plot was hard to follow. Tequila Sunrise was very well written, has fantastic acting and when I first saw the movie in the theatre when I was 15 I understood the plot perfectly fine. In fact I was so taken by the film that I went to the theatre twice to see it within a one week period! Robert Towne created an absolute masterpiece.
I've had this movie on VHS and Laserdisc and I have it on DVD and I can't wait to see it in glorious 1080P and hear that amazing David Sanborn solo many more times in gorgeous lossless audio when it arrives on Blu-ray.
Movie Review: One of my favourites Summary: 5 Stars
I have no idea what other reviewers are talking about when they write that this movie is hard to follow. This is no Pulp Fiction, where the characters die in one scene and are walking around like nothing happened in the next. Tequila Sunrise is easy to follow, despite the twists. What good movie doesn't have twists? Of course, the second time you watch any movie, the twists make more sense - you can even say that about Pulp Fiction, which is one of the most confusing movies I've ever seen (the first time I watched it...). The plot for Tequila Sunrise is engaging, the characters are sexy, and the setting is great. There's relationship stuff for the women and cops and robbers action for the men. What's not to love? If you're not sure about buying this movie, try renting it first. I'm sure you'll be back to make the purchase. It's worth watching and rewatching over the years.
