Movie Reviews of TeethMovie Review: Whitest Teeth You'll Ever See Summary: 4 Stars
I thought this one was going to be too gross for me to watch, but my wife ordered it and reluctantly I set in to watch, a TV tray covering my genitals. The movie has two awful kids playing the heroine and her stepbrothers as children, but after they age into high schoolers (though both of them have got to be 30, surely?) the picture improves no end. Dawn has matured into one of the Promise Ring girls like the cheerleader who got pregnant on GLEE and had to give up her baby. An unfortunate series of circumstances leads Dawn to discover that she has had a horrid trick played on her by biology.... And the plot of the movie is basically how she comes to terms with her discovery. In CARRIE the storyline pretty much had Carrie cracking up when her powers took over, destroying sll that she loved along with herself. In TEETH the ending is a bit more optimistic. It's sort of like CARRIE rewritten to allow for that thing with feathers Emily Dickinson called "hope."
Jess Weixler is astoundingly good as Dawn, maybe almost as good as Sissy Spacek was in the original, only the movie itself lets her down here and there. I never did figure out what happened with Tobey and the mystery of his missing body? Was it supposed to make you wonder for the moment if Dawn was crazy--BLACK SWAN crazy--and these things hadn't happened at all?
The awfullest thing was the casting of John Hensley as the sadistic, bored stepbrother. Hensley filled out quite a bit in this from when he was young, lean and androgynous as the son in NIP/TUCK, and he looks like an overweight Frank N. Furter--like Meat Loaf playing Frank N. Furter. He does a good job with the part, but he's the freak of nature, not Dawn, and whenever he's onscreen you can't look away, in horror, the way people used to look at Laird Cregar in the Fox horror films of the 1940s, there's got to be something medical that makes John Hensley look as weird as he does, and he can't have long to live, poor boy.
Movie Review: DARK COMEDY WITH BITE Summary: 4 Stars
When I first read the concept for Teeth, I thought it was just going to be like another campy, slasher, piece of schlock with alot of modern FX and little substance. I own a copy of "Killer Condom", and I thought this flick would possibly be similar, but actually it's not. Basically the charming, hopefully sweet Dawn is saving herself for marriage. Well, she's so cute what guy wouldn't want to ask her out, so of course we have a conflict. Dawn finds herself having feelings for Toby. When she gets him alone at last, the results are disastrous. The thread starts to unravel as Dawn finds out her special "secret". Actually it ends up being a great source of distress for Dawn and you really feel sorry for her. Dawn confides in another guy who she thinks is her friend, but he was just using her for a bet. Then there is her maniacal step-brother who wants a piece of the action as well. It seems like every encounter poor Dawn has with the opposite sex ends up in murder. Towards the end Dawn seems to accept the fact that she can't change anything, and actually uses her "secret" to exact revenge on her step-brother. This movie had an interesting enough plot that it will make the viewer want to see it all the way through. I was pleased that this was so smart and the laughs are mostly situational. This was dark comedy done well. I'm also glad that this didn't turn into a dull, typical slasher flick that I just wanted to fast-forward through. I'm sure that every girl in the world has at one time pondered the best revenge on a guy, whether it be a boyfriend or a tormenting jerk at school. In fact, I think any girl who is going through a tough time with a guy like that and needs a motivational boost, should probably rent "Teeth", for a good, wicked laugh. I hope to see the girl that played Dawn in more films.
Movie Review: All I have to say is WOW... Summary: 4 Stars
Whoever thought that a film about a young woman with a carniverous vagina would be so good, or thought provoking? I remember seeing the trailers for this, which left me with my mouth hanging wide open in disbelief. I could not BELIEVE that they had made such a film as this, yet I was strangely curious. It didn't play around South Carolina, and so I missed the theatrical run. Thank God for DVD's. I finally rented it the other day and watched it. It has to be one of the most over the top, extreme films that I have ever seen since FREEWAY.
It's basically about this virginal teenager who is very militant and gung-ho about staying celebate until her wedding day. However, she ultimately becomes betrayed by her first crush, and he attempts to rape her. Well, he succeeds, until something inside of her vagina rips off his dingaling, leaving a bloody stump -- and rendering the audience speechless in the process, that is, if you are completely successful in containing your laughter. As sick as it sounds, it really is quite hilarious. So anyways, our heroine finds a use for her newfound set of choppers. She strikes back at the men who try to take advantage of her in any way, by doing away with their penises...and/or fingers.
It's pretty crazy. This is a film that I can only recommend to the brave, or to those who would "get" it's humor without being totally offended. The subject matter alone will turn off many...but for those of us who are curious, and are in the mood for something...well...original, you can't go wrong with TEETH.
God help me. SEE IT!
Movie Review: Verry good film... from a bold concept. Summary: 4 Stars
Finally someone got the courage to make a film about such an unusual subject: a girl with a toothed vagina. And interestingly enough, almost everything on this movie seems to click.
Dawn is a girl living in a small town (close to a nuclear power plant). She is a virgin and just met this guy who seems perfect. Until one day he tries to rape her and... Terrified with the episode, Dawn goes to a gynecologist who feels she is just an ignorant teenager and decides to abuse her. Bad move. As Dawn learns more and more about herself and her sexuality, she discovers she is unique... and no one will take advantage of her.
The screenplay is beautifully written and the acting is superb. Every character here shows a superior casting work.
But the most interesting element in this film is the clear critique to the blind puritanism and ignorance found in some parts of America. It is not by mere chance that Dawn belongs to those movements who advocate celibacy (using a red ring on her finger)... or that a simple model of the female reproductive system on a school book is covered by a large sticker by determination of the school board... or that some students mock the example of evolutionism given by the teacher...
So Dawn goes from incident to incident while trying to understand herself and her sexuality... until she fully realizes all the idiocy and hypocrisy of world full of people who are even freakier than her.
A truly unique film with a beautiful message.
Movie Review: A squirm inducing take on female empowerment Summary: 4 Stars
Chances are that if you are in tune with the horror genre (and even if you aren't) you have heard something about Teeth. Jess Weixler stars as Dawn, an abstinance preaching high school student who gets a huge surprise when she discovers she has quite the physical advantage when she becomes the object of male sexual violence. You can figure out what this advantage is just from reading the film's synopsis, which is basically the ultimate form of female empowerment. Had the genders been reversed in some way, Teeth would be pure exploitation all the way, but instead, Teeth is an often gripping (and somewhat cheesey), and nearly unforgettable, tale of revenge. The only real flaws with Teeth is that a majority of the situations Dawn finds herself in, namely getting forced against her will, come off as unrealistic. However, the film is really an amalgamation of female empowerment, exploitation, cautionary tale, and plain horror; yet it never feels like it, or feel generic for that matter either. Weixler is quite good in the leading role, as is Nip/Tuck's John Hensley as Dawn's sadistic half brother who you just know is going to get what he deserves. All in all, Teeth is definitely worth a look, but be forewarned fellow men, if you are of the faint of heart, well, do proceed with caution.
