Movie Review: The right approach to Tchaikovsky
Summary: 5 Stars
I followed Von Karajan's career for years/decades-- and my enthusiasm for his talent has ebbed and flowed. Yes, hard to get past what seems to be the camera narcicissm and his political history. But these are superb, first rate performances of the 3 major Tchaikovsky symphonies. Intense, white-hot-- but never heart-on-the-sleeve. And the technical prowess of the famed Berlin forces is overwhelming.
This goes next to my desert-island Mravinsky set. Camera work is excellent and not as excessively centered on Von Karajan as in latter DVD's.
