Movie Reviews of Tattoo, a Love StoryMovie Review: much more than skin deep Summary: 5 Stars
I found this going for a song, and as a tattooed person (and screenwriter) was keen to see what kind of take the film makers might have on "this world" (that of tattooists and their lives), and was delighted by this super charming flick. I'd been talking with one tattooist who'd done a lot of work on me, about the fact that every film to approach the subject was invariably some kind of horror/crime tale, with the tattooists themselves rarely part of the story, and the "tattooed" usually low rent criminals who end up badly. Their ink etc was merely a costume, having little to do with the character or story, but for the assumption "bad guys have tatt's/piercings" etc so of course only bad people ever get inked and ultimately come to a sticky end. Tattoo: A Love Story, is not, as the title suggests, one such film. Aside from the life of the uptight school teacher, this is largely set in the milieu of Virgil and his mates and colleagues, who couldn't be a more friendly bunch. Virgil might not produce the best ink youve ever seen (he wouldnt be featured on "Miami/LA/London/etc Ink" for instance) but we forget that for every ARTIST, there is another out there just getting by with basic designs...and thats part of this stories progress. He realises the boring slog of putting crap flash on folk who really have no concept of what they want ('cept that they must have a tattoo to fit in with their friends etc), is becoming too much. Inspired by the love of someone he would've thought "out of his league", it's enough to make him become a better artist. Alternately the conservative teacher, Sara, realises shes become part of a system which discourages individualism, or originality, something Virgil personifies writ large! What these two characters brings to each other is a genuinely lovely funny experience to watch. The humour is slyly cheeky, but never cruel, the smaller roles (even the pasing extras) are all very good, and the vignettes between the bigger story of folk talking about why they got tattooed and with what, puts it all into a bigger context. Now everytime i see a copy of this going cheaply, i grab it and give it to someone, as i did "my" tattooist. Having now seen tattooists treated with respect and as real people on film, i think i can safely go back to my own ideas of a horror anthology without feeling that such a film as this would never be made, lol! I sure hope the director, writer and actors of this film have been awarded with success cos I'd sure be interested to see more work from them, and especially big Virgil!
