Movie Review: lush and beautiful

I happened across this dvd (w/original Japanese language) in a used record store and thought I'd give it a try - and boy, it's one of my favorite 'kids' movies' hands down (and I've seen so many!). It's based on a few traditional Japanese folk stories that are interwoven. The animation is lush and gorgeous, and the story itself full of wonder, just very enchanting and beautiful, and the music complimented every scene. Taro is a little boy with extraordinary strength; he battles some local demons, befriends a magical flute-playing girl, and goes on a search for his mother, who was turned into a dragon.... Even though there's action, it's nothing like the to-the-throttle action of many kids' movies, it's milder and less constant. The tale ends up being a bit of a tearjerker, too, in his search for his mother, but not in a way children watching couldn't handle. If you like folk and fairy tales, or simply beautiful and moving animation, this is great!
