Movie Reviews of Tango

Movie Review: candy for the eyes and ears even though the plot is dry
Summary: 5 Stars

I could not get enough of this movie because of the way in which the dancing, lighting, music blended beautifully. I have never seen anything like it before. As a matter of fact, I thought it was so invigorating that I watched it three times in a row. As soon as I finished watching this movie I went out to buy the soundtrack because of the outstanding work that was done by Argentinian musician Lalo Schifrin. The only thing that needs work in this movie is the plot. It is not a very good one and leaves you wondering why they paired Elena and Mario in the first place. Nevertheless, the artwork ( choreography, music, and cinematography) of the movie speaks for itself and therefore I give it 5 stars.

Movie Review: Terrific Tango
Summary: 5 Stars

From beginning to end, the film Tango is infused with exquisite music and superb dancing. Although the story line is rather confusing and uninteresting, it works to glue all the dazzling tangos together and to offer some reason for the amazing variety of dances. With repeated watchings, you begin to notice the subtle themes in the music and choreography that repeat throughout, adding an invisible but powerful underlying rhythm to the production. For those dancing tango now, it's fun to see the differences between current styling techniques and those shown in this ten year-old film. Cecilia Narova's dancing is phenomenal; her only dance with Juan Carlos Copes (at the very end of the film) is a classic.

Movie Review: If you like edge, sharpen your shoes
Summary: 5 Stars

This film slaps you on a regular basis, not that you would need it to stay awake. The concepts are there, the test is "Can you follow along and not get lost?" You begin by thinking you're along for the playwrights ride, then you learn it's about love - in all it's forms - then you discover history in it's ugliest, and Tango is simply the disguise.

It is a bit drab in some areas but the alarm clocks along the way and the subtext is perfect for those who cut their "film" teeth on Fellini, Truffaut, and Bergman.

You will want to see it more than once just so you can get it all. There's more here than meets the eye.

Movie Review: Switch to Spanish Language, turn subtitles off, otherwise you get commentary
Summary: 5 Stars

I just want to reiterate the importance of monkeying around with the language choice within the DVD menu settings, otherwise you are stuck listening to one of those audio commentaries. (I don't know why those commentaries have become so popular.) Thanks to the amazon reviewer below who pointed this out--I had stopped watching the film, reported the netflix dvd as damaged but then went online to amazon, found the reviewer's helpful tip and was able to then turn the commentary off. Glad I did--the dancing and acting of this movie is exquisite. I just ordered the soundtrack so I can listen to it while driving. Really a very special movie.

Movie Review: Beautiful, amazing, fabulous
Summary: 5 Stars

This is one of the best films I have seen in quite a long time. It captures the spirit of Argentina through its beautiful, artistic portrayal of the Argentine cultural experience throughout history. It is not simply about the dance; the dance is the director's medium of expression. If you're looking for a film that explores a nation through a dance that epitomizes its culture and spirit, The Tango, this is the movie for you. It is not, and I'm quite sure was not intended to be, a psuedo-instructional video about dancing the tango. For that you'll have to look somewhere else.
