Movie Reviews of Take the LeadMovie Review: Spine-Tingling in a Good Way! Summary: 5 Stars
The ads for -Take the Lead- push the idea it's yet another -To Sir, With Love-. [Yes, that includes -Dangerous Minds- & if not -Blackboard Jungle-!!] But Sidney Poitier was never as sexy as Banderas. Nor was the concept of kids learning, almost against their wills, conveyed as infectiously as in this movie.
Banderas plays Pierre Duaine, a ballroom dance teacher, who semi-volunteers to 'take care of' the kids in Detention ... & uses the sex, the raw *desire* expressed in the Tango ["You haven't *earned* the tango," he tells one eager Hispanic wannabe] to lure the Detention kids into his love of dance. Rob Brown also stars as "Rock", a kid on the edge of crime who yearns for more, & get it -- in spades -- from Dulane.
But it's the abandoned kids ["I don't see any rejects,"Dulane earnestly argues, buoying up the depressed attitudes in his 'class'] who truly make this film move. From the pairing of the gawky would-be cotillion girl w/a gentle giant misnamed Monster, to the redheaded punk paired w/a heavy girl who discovers himself -- gasp! -- actually falling for her, to the uneasy 3some of Hispanic lad, his girlfriend, & her black dancing partner, the pairing & pathos of these kids, who only need *some*1 caring about/for them.
W/Dulane's encouragement, the kids enter a dance contest, showing up the spoiled white kids who are their opponents. The electricifying decision to drag the 3rd of their 'group' into a tangled web of a tango brought down the house even in the near-vanilla cinema where i saw it [there were a few dark flecks, as in truly great ice cream] [& hey! when's the last time *you* heard a theatre-full of people clap at the movies, besides -Star Wars-?]. & Monster's agreeing to help his cotillion girlfriend -- who's dancing w/these kids because "I belong here!" -- despite her decision not to ask him because "You wouldn't belong w/those people" is almost heartbreaking in its sincerity, sweet w/o stickiness.
Ignore the carpers; this movie *moves*, hearts & feet!
