Movie Reviews of Tai Chi for Health: Yang Long FormMovie Review: Fantastic Tai Chi Instruction Summary: 5 Stars
I first purchased the video Tai Chi for Health back in 1982 when I was living in the Phillipines and practiced it daily for several years, using the video as my guide. I fell out of frequent practice for the past 10 years due to life commitments.
Now, over 27 years later, I am starting back with my Tai Chi practice. I was not able to find my video so I figured on the spur of the moment I would purchase 2 other Tai Chi DVDs. Those were by far inferior to this one.
I was able to find Tai Chi for Health in DVD form in my local public library and checked it out for 2 weeks. The DVD makes learning easy as you can pick out the movements you want to practice unlike the video where you always had to rewind etc.
The DVD is just a souped up version of the 27 year old video. It is the same video but with mapping so that you can go to different parts of the routine. It also has some additional footage. The quality of the DVD is very good, though not HD quality. The instruction, as always, is outstanding. It is amazing how slow Mr Dun goes through the entire routine with all the different moves. I remember when I was younger learning it my legs were really sore. He is really a master. Another thing that is nice about the video and DVD is that the camera angle remains the same, so while you are facing him and mirroring him, you do not get mixed up like in other DVDs I have used that keep changing up the camera angle. This instruction (Video and DVD) also has a small inset window in the corner of the picture for some of the moves so that you can see what the move looks like from the front at the same time you see him moving with a side view.
His verbal instruction is also very good so that you can listen to the commentary as you learn the moves and it gives you the verbal cues as to what is comming next instead of having to stare at the TV all the time. You can even try to record the sound on your IPod and just take that part with you somewhere to practice and just follow the verbal cues. There are just a few errors of left and right, but once you learn the basic moves you know where the errors are on the voice cues and disregard them.
Again, the best video/DVD on Tai Chi I have seen and it has a huge number of moves compared to other videos. It has remained an excellent teaching tool for all these years. For $20 or less you are REALLY getting some great instruction and this will probably be the only DVD you will need to learn Tai Chi for many years. And no, I don't work for the company that sells these things. I just like the product.
