Movie Reviews of Synecdoche, New York [Blu-ray]

Movie Review: Arguably the most profound film ever made.
Summary: 5 Stars

While the concept of the film itself is not too hard to wrap ones head around, it is ultimately the existence of this film, as an actual film that got made and was just today released on Bluray no less that is completely insane because the film is so smart and dealing with topics rarely seen on the shelves of Target or Wall Mart.

This film will confuse most people because it is a film about the very nature of existence and even more specifically the nature of existence as seen through the mind of a creative individual. To take the film literally is to do it an injustice. In fact people in general today, reviewers and moviegoers alike, tend to take films far, far to literally and often are unable to burry themselves into the art of a film. Many reviews I read of movies i enjoyed from trite garbage to better or great films tend to be written by people who only let the film skim off them like a skipping stone on a pond. All I can say to that is, "jump in people, head first!" We must all lose ourselves in art much more often and stop being so critical of everything. It is harder to take the time to appreciate films of all kinds than it is to see a film and be critical of it. Please do not decide right away if you loved it or hated it and rather let the film just stay with you for a while and mull it over. Everything out there from Dr Dolittle to the worlds most celebrated cinema has some merits. Please take the time to see what everything has to offer before summarily dismissing it. This film should not be written off too fast because you did not get it or it was too enigmatic, or too bizarre.

My favorite films are ones that can be seen again and again and again and looked at from multiple ways of thinking and revisited from multiple points of view and times in ones life. This is one such film.

Although this is sure to be a knee jerk simplistic view of the film I will say that the film itself is a metaphor representing each and every one of us. The main character, Caden, goes through many representations, male and female. Different people come in and out of his life. He is represented as seeing things from a variety of different perspectives and all the while his body is failing, as are all our bodies. We do what we can to stave off the inevitable but in the end death comes for us all. What we do here defines our lives. Wasting our time ultimately does no one an injustice but ourselves.

The warehouse can easily be seen as a mind or the mind of Caden, and Caden himself as a representation of everyone. The dream like cuts and jumps in the film happen to us all daily as time slips away so very fast and accomplishments go unaccomplished and life is just lived. We wake from dreams all the time that are odder than the film itself. Our inner life of dreams and metaphor mirror our real lives in a way few ever understand.

Fate and free will are tackled too in the movie. Do we have a choice to say what we say, do what we do, go where we go, or are we driven by unseen forces in the universe and beyond? Suspecting a bit of both and a tug of war is a decent conclusion to arrive at. This film seems to represent that tug of war we all have with what to do, where to go, what to say, and the forces that push and pull us as well from behind the curtains.

Kaufman has explored this all before. Being John Malkovich with its puppets and people inside people controlling others from outside and from within. Our memories of people long gone still speak to us. Is it them, our memories of them, or do they live on inside us, controlling us?

Much art, especially the cinema is viewed as pretend. This film takes that and suggests that perhaps it's not. A kiss is a kiss, no matter its intent. Is represented lovemaking the same as real lovemaking? Is the recorded reality of a film a reality nonetheless?

This film may pose a lot of questions but it is something to be viewed and savored again and again. A film to be discussed. Something to cherish, rather than watched and thrown on the heap. Ultimately though, it is just another film, just as we are each just another life, no more or less special than everyone else around us.

No go wrap your head around it. And for Gods sake, enjoy your life. Eventually it will end.
