Movie Reviews of Sympathy for Mr. VengeanceMovie Review: A graphic tale of retribution Summary: 4 Stars
Director Chan-wook Park displays an unmistakeable penchant for unadulterated violence as he demonstrates in "Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance". The film centers on Korean industrial worker the deaf mute and green coiffed Ryu played by Ha-kyun Shin. Ryu's sister is in desperate need of a kidney transplant. Out of devotion to her and lacking the sufficient funds to afford the procedure, he schemes to sell his own organs to a black market operation for cash.
His plans go awry and he loses his job and soon after is bilked out of all his money. With the assistance of his radical opined girlfriend Cha Yeong-mi played by Du-na Bae, they plan a kidnapping to raise the necessary funds. The victim is the adorable young daughter of Ryu's boss, the affluent industrialist Park Don-jing played by Kang-ho Song.
Although treated nicely by Ryu and his girlfriend the vivacious young girl, Yu-sun, tragically and accidently drowns. When the crime is discovered, businessman Park embarks on a dizzying path of violence against those deemed responsible. Meanwhile, Ryu's sister has also died spiralling him down an identical path, towards a highly anticipated confrontation.
Director Park's storyline in the film rivals and appears to be a warm up for his classic film "Oldboy", where a familiar theme of revenge is also played`out.
Movie Review: Blood Splatting Summary: 4 Stars
Splatting a bunch of heads like a coconut was a bit queasy. Stabbings, drownings, and electrocutions were bad; yet, I handled it okay. After a while, Chan Wook Park made me feel as if I was reading an action comic book full of strange twists of fate and blood curdling gore. Our hero is a deaf mute and his girlfriend is a waif-sized revolutionary. She does him "on top" wailing in sign language. The little kidnapped girl should bring a nice ransom to get sis a new kidney, but alas, cruel Asian Fate, what horrors await.
Park holds scenes too long. He needs more discipline in the editing room. Green hair playing with the little girl for ten minutes or burying a body for another ten minutes while a very annoying device character, a retard of some sort wanders about causing mayhem, I started to look at my watch. It all comes together in a blood bath of revenge. Sympathy is a very interesting take on Korean revenge mythology and modern society. But what that take is I'm not sure. This one is necessary for film aficionados, just for the camera set-ups and stunning color.
Movie Review: Painful story to watch Summary: 4 Stars
Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance starts off simply. Ryu loves his sister very much. She is sick, and needs a kidney transplant, but first they don't have the kidney, and later they don't have the money. To get the money the boy's patriot girlfriend hatches a plot to kidnap his former boss' daughter and ask for a ransom. But things get complicated, accidents and misunderstandings happen, and people end up dead.
There are actually two Mr. Vengeances that the story follows, both trying to seek redemption and going about it the wrong way. Neither of them are evil men, but the loss of their loved ones leads them to do things that would be ordinarily beyond their nature.
This is a slow quiet film, the violence that unravels is like a slap in the face. The ending is heart breaking, and hard to watch, but it couldn't have ended any other way.
Movie Review: Revenge! Summary: 4 Stars
The first of a trilogy by director Chan Wook Park. One of the top Korean directors working. You may have missed this one especially if you haven't seen OLDBOY or LADY VEANGEANCE! This movie isn't as visually spectacular as the two but it makes up for that with raw in your face violence. A story about a stolen kidney and a kidnapping gone wrong. The blood is intense and the action is a little brutal. All in all a fresh raw take on the revenge plot. Great acting, cinematography, and direction. This is just the start of a master coming into hs own!!!
Movie Review: Vengeance is whose? Summary: 4 Stars
Betrayed by black market organ dealers, a man (Shin Ha-kyun) kidnaps the daughter (Han Bo-bae) of a company CEO (Song Kang-Ho) in order to earn money to save his ill sister (Lim Ji-Eun). This sets a complicated web of revenge in motion that is catastrophic for all concerned.
This is the first part of Park Chan-Wook's Vengeance trilogy. It effectively portrays both the futility of seeking vengeance and the raw pain that motivates it. An extraordinary film.
