Movie Reviews of SwordfishMovie Review: Travolta At His Best. Summary: 5 Stars
First of all, don't listen to me. In fact, don't listen to anyone when it comes to this movie. It's one of those that you will either love or hate, there is no in-between. The best thing to do is just see it for yourself and develop your own opinion on it.Now, if you decide to listen to me after all, here is my review. I'll be honest, when it came out on video, I had never heard of it. When it was mentioned to me by a friend, I thought it sounded like some cheesy, Steven Segal movie, so I was hesitant to rent it, but I went ahead and got. The opening scene is very misleading. It starts out with John Travolta's character talking about movies. It's kind of slow and if you've seen Get Shorty, you start to wonder if this is what it's going to be like. This theory is proven wrong not one minute later. It catches your attention from the beginning and holds it until the very end. To say you saw what was coming is very misleading but that's exactly what this movie is. Misleading. It leads the viewer in one direction, then does a 180, curses along for a while at 75 MPH, then reverses 10 feet and goes left. The ending is a classic, ending in an unconventional chase sequence that will leave you breathless. All in all, I would say it is the best movie I have seen in a very long time. One of Mr. Travolta's best. And Halle Berry wasn't too bad herself. ;) But, as I said, don't listen to me. Go out and see it for yourself.
Movie Review: A ton better than [poor] teen films like XXX. Summary: 5 Stars
I truly can understand other reviewers negative comments about this film. Unfortunately, the film industry has been putting out heaps of [stuff] like "The Fast and the Furious" and "XXX". However, unlike those movies, Swordfish isn't a [poor] teen flick that makes you feel retarded after watching it. I mean, this film has some definitely interesting ideas about dealing with terrorism. Ironically, made before 9/11, Swordfish involves a black ops agent who acquires the help of a hacker who's down on his luck. Mayhem soon follows as Hugh Jackman's character realizes the kind of mess he's gotten himself into. I gave this film 5 stars because I actually apprecieted the fact that the characters were comprised of thirty something actors. These days, Hollywood tries too freaking much to appeal to teenagers by having films featuring meat heads like Vin Disel. Plus, in a wierd way, this movie stands out for me since there's sort of no real qoute on qoute "bad guy" in this film. The director of Swordfish also did the incredibly awful "Gone in 60 Seconds". However, he definitely makes up for it with this movie. Take the time to watch Swordfish, for an action flick, it definitely has some interesting views about such important topics like global terrorism, which is something that's lacking in today's films.
Movie Review: Nothing fishy here; just a good time! Summary: 5 Stars
I saw this in the theaters and I was hooked from start to finish;it's John Travolta's soild comeback from the pits of his massive stinkbomb Battlefield Earth. Here he is the bad guy Gabriel who, with the help of his sorta-gal pal Ginger(Halle Berry),gets a burnt-out computer wiz Stanley Jobson(Hugh Jackson)to try to hack 10 million bucks from a goverment slush fund called Operation Swordfish. There alot of twists and turns in the plot to keep you guessing to the ending credits.Halle is really sexy in her role as Ginger(where's Gillagan?)and Hugh proves he's a rookie actor to be reckoned with. And action?Well, there tons of that, the standouts being the 360-pan explosion and a an airlifted transport bus flying through L.A. It's a bit far-fetched,but hey its only a movie! This film was directed by Dominic Sena, who also directed one of my favorite action flicks 2000's Gone In 60 Seconds!Swordfish makes a very satisfying addition to your DVD collection. [WARNING:There's some stuff that may be too disturbing for viewers still shakened by the 9-11 terrorist attacks, like using people as deadly bombs to demolish an a entire town.If you are,I suggest you pass this one up for awhile.]
Movie Review: Don't believe the pros! Swordfish is smokin! Summary: 5 Stars
Let me reaffirm what another reviewer said: Don't the so-called professional critics scare you off this movie IF you like lots of action, sex ..., adventure, a few plot turns and more than a few explosions. If that is your bag, though, Swordfish is certainly a movie worth checking out. The plot is startlingly simple, but takes a while to get developed. Travolta is fine as a smooth, in-control antiterrorist agent. He somehow has Halle Berry (Lord have mercy, she is fine!) Help him recruit the greatest computer hacker in the known world. Their scheme is to transfer a cool ten million bucks which found its way into secret government accounts to Travolta's own end. ...I found the climax and the plot turns to be satisfying and it certainly was not my "passive attention which was held. And I don't care if the computer scenes were somehowy "unrealistic", because I was still wowed by the opening scene at the bank with the hostage-turned-into-a-claymore-mine. This is a movie that is certainly entertaining. If I need to be more intellectually challenged, I will read some Einstein.
Movie Review: Wow! What a great first 5 minutes! Summary: 5 Stars
5 of 5 stars for this exciting suspense movie. The first 5 minutes of the movie is an amazing set of scenes acting as a kick-start for this high-tension, suspenseful action movie. Right down to the little ball-bearing rolling towards to camera covered in blood--amazing effects!
Travolta's character is truly evil--calm, cool, collected but evil. Frankly, he is really a terrorist trying to sway events using violence. Ruthlessly cold, he doesn't mind killing people to get his way. For his purposes, he needs a top-class computer hacker (Jackman) who he recruits via Halle Berry's character.
Thru the whole movie, there are twists and turns. Travolta even makes a speech to Jackman about how Harry Hudini did his tricks "mis-direction"! Several times, you learn things are not as they appeared to mis-direct efforts. Travolta is in total control.
Lots of action scenes, chases, explosions, machine guns, RPGs, etc. The ending scenes have several surprise twists; remember, mis-direction!
