Movie Reviews of Swordfish [Blu-ray]

Movie Review: Swordfish on bluray
Summary: 4 Stars

I had just finished watching Swordfish laughing all the while, not because it stars Martin Lawrence and is a comedy, but because it glorifies hacking as a wonderous world of quad lcd screens, ds3 connections and advanced cell processor technologies. It is none of that. It is a dark and dingy existence, with nary the notoriety or excitement of a silly hollywood script. You only find loneliness, seclusion from others and civilisation. It's a world where peeping tom's look inside your hard disks rather than your bedroom window.

There is a scene where Halle Berry's boobs are shown while she sunbathes while reading Dante's Inferno. It was a very awkward scene that felt out of place because there was no logic to it. It wasn't the same as Phoebe Cate's immersing from a swimming pool dripping wet as her top comes off in Judge Reinhold's bathroom fantasy, that was classic. It was more like that scene in Walk Hard during the gangbang where guys walk around naked and guys watching find an excuse to get something from the kitchen. Ok it wasn't that bad. (I was kidding about the Dante's Inferno)

John Travolta's depiction of the patriotic terrorist was spot on. Like his part in Broken Arrow, he seems more suited in the part of the villain. My favorite travolta role was in Face Off, that weird thing he did while smoking a cigarette, when I smoked I tried doing that thinng many times and failed, looking more like the frazzled smoking girl played by Jeneane Garofalo in Romy & Michelle's High School Reunion. That soul patch he was sporting seemed to add to the nefariousness of his character.

Hugh Jackman as the notorious hacker, the part was played very well but not very realistic. Realistic hackers look like DJ Qualls in the movie The Core. Either skinny and awkward or rotund obese fella's that make Jack Black look like the latest Jenny Craig success story. Hugh Jackman is more the Calvin Klein underwear model type in this role. Having watched the bonus content on the bluray, it's interesting to note that the actors in this movie are asked about their real life experiences with computers, their answers are humorous and amazing.

There are two alternate endings to this film presented. My favorite being the one where Hugh Jackman gets the better of John Travolta and not vice versa. Do yourself a treat and watch them. At the current price of the bluray it's worth the money.

Overall it was an entertaining movie and the action was well paced. The bluray transfer was very good. If you haven't gone bluray yet you are really missing out. The level of detail is staggering. It breathes life back to old forgotten movies.

Movie Review: Sizing Up the Picture
Summary: 4 Stars

This is not a review of the movie itself (there are other comments and reviews in this one and the dvd version) but a review of the video transfer of this Blu Ray. This is a good looking transfer in 1080p/VC-1 video, colors are very well saturated, blacks are rock solid and the contrast is really good. The audio is in English Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround and encoded at 640kbps. It has a lot of sorround effects specially in the beggining with the 'Matrix'-esque "girl with bomb explodes" sequence. That sequence in particular is the one you can display to show your blu ray player.
The bottom line... it is a nice (but not excellent) action film that will look good in Blu Ray, specially beign one of the first who came out.

Movie Review: Not great, but entertaining
Summary: 4 Stars

I think I mainly liked this movie for the great blu-ray clarity and the fact that it wasn't your typical action movie. The picture is astonishingly clear and vivid through blu-ray conversion. John Travolta plays a fairly decent bad guy and the story has some twists that keep your attention. I thought the plot was rather ridiculous though, but definitely an original. The motive for the characters wasn't just for a lot of money, like every other boring action movie, but the actual use of the money was the motivation. Good guy needed money to get his daughter back, bad guy needed money for anti-terrorism in his own demented way. Nothing great, but overall, a fun movie to watch on blu-ray.

Movie Review: Region coding
Summary: 4 Stars

Why do they insist that it's a region 1 disc? I have this BD, and it plays fine on my region C Sony BDP-S550. This title wasn't even released on Blu-ray independently for region C, so it should be definitely region free. Well, I actually purchased mine at Amazon.co.uk, but it looks exactly as the one here. At [...] it is also confirmed to be region free.

Movie Review: wow......wwwwow
Summary: 4 Stars

They did a good job cleaning this movie to make it look so sharp on HD. So sharp I caught myself rewinding Halle Berry's scene a few times before continuing the movie.
