Movie Reviews of Sword of GideonMovie Review: The movie that Spielberg's "Munich" was a remake of... Summary: 4 Stars
Having originally seen this made-for-HBO movie in the 1980's when it was first on cable, I decided to watch it again after seeing Spielberg's "Munich." The two movies, both based on the same book, differ in a few minor plot devices but are otherwise quite similar. I would say that the earlier version has a slightly less dark emotional feel to it; the Mossad handler comes across as not quite as evilly conniving as Spielberg's, for example. Both movies make Avner out to be the archetype Hero, mislead by the evil Spymaster into becoming an assassin, but finally seeing the Light and turning back to Righteousness. That's to be expected, I guess, since their both based on his book. But neither addresses the inherent disparity between a soldier's concept of honor and the pragmatism necessary to a covert ops team.
Movie Review: HBO Movie Done Well Summary: 4 Stars
In addition to the other reviews, this movie is an HBO release and is full screen on the DVD. It's intriguing at times, but moves slowly elsewhere (thus, editting could have been better). It's a good look into one of the Mossad's more infamous moments. In particular, Avner's interaction with Le Group is interesting and perhaps gives an insight into today's underworld of information trafficing. The movie isn't a docudrama per se nor a story about the hunt down for Black September, but more about Avner, the leader of the "Sword of Gideon" group. Thus, the story ends when he quits the Mossad. Overall, a good spy movie with lots of zingers.
Movie Review: The Poor Man's 'Munich' Summary: 3 Stars
'Sword of Gideon' is essentially a B-rated, 1980's version of Steven Spielberg's 'Munich.' I was a bit surprised at the striking similarity between the two; many of the scenes were almost identical. Depending on how you look at it, you could call the latter either a rip-off or a remake of the former. Nevertheless, I don't see how anyone could think this was better than 'Munich.' It does go into a bit more detail in some parts, but the acting, cinematography, dialogue and the overall production quality is all second rate. Worth a watch if the subject matter interests you, but hardly a monumental cinematic achievement by any means. Or so the prophecy says.....
Movie Review: descent plot, B-rated film, lots of profanity Summary: 1 Stars
Well, we enjoyed the LONG movie in a generic sense, but were disappointed as we watched a member of the secret team cheating on his wife back home (and dying in the process). However, the greatest disappointment was the regular swearing in the film. We'd hoped for cleaner film, but this film should have a rating of at least PG-13...with the swearing and the assasinations.
Originally we were thinking that a basic Israeli film that isn't rated ("not rated" stamped on the DVD cover) would be clean enough for a good family movie. Not true. Don't recommend buying this movie, for that very reason.
Oddly enough, though not specifically about this film itself, we've noticed a pattern with entertainment films staring Israelis or taking place in the Land.....& that is the presence of American swearing and typical sexual immorality/coveteousness relationships. <sigh> We've watched several Israeli Film Festival movies, for example, and we've come to learn that swearing & sexual immorality is a normative for these unrated films with their actors. Bummer.
Movie Review: The format description is FALSE!! Summary: 1 Stars
