Movie Reviews of Swing Kids

Movie Review: Fascism and fun don't mix.
Summary: 4 Stars

I saw this movie originally back in the mid 1990's and it made such an impression on me that I watched it again on DVD just last week.

I appreciate this movie first of all because it does tell a reasonably accurate story of events that really took place. I never would have suspected that there were youths in Germany in the late 1930's rebelling against the Nazis and that Swing dancing would be the hallmark of their movement.

Also, the way the plot depicts the slow and steady creep of totalitarianism into all areas of life is downright chilling.

Finally, the music was great fun. This movie, when I first saw it, helped spark my own interest in Swing and jazz and the dance styles of the 1930s and 1940s.

On the downside, the "German" youths really didn't seem very German. They seemed more like Americans living in Germany. I suppose the ultimate in realism would be to have everyone speaking German with English subtitles. Still, it's easy enough to suspend one's disbelief and enjoy the film.

I agree that the ending with the little brother screaming "swing heil" was overdone and probably should have been done differently. The DVD didn't have any additional features on it at all.

Still, a thought provoking history lesson.

Movie Review: Swing Kids Review
Summary: 4 Stars

I thought this movie was quite good because it really gave the point of view of Germans during WW2. I had been wondering for so long what normal German people did during the war, because usually all you can find are movies about Jews and people hiding Jews. For this reason, the movie was really interesting. The swing music was awesome and energetic, and I loved it and was inspired by it. The movie accurately portrayed Hitler's effect on the Germans; their friendships, etc. It showed how easily one could be swallowed up in the propaganda. Another thing i really liked was the way the boys were portrayed. I mean, they acted like normal teenagers, and that's something you can't find in a lot of movies of this content. All of the violence and such was stuff I didn't quite like, but I appreciated it because it added to the reality of the movie; everything in it was neccesary to add to the reality. Still, I found a lot of funny parts, although there is a much deeper meaning, and it really hit home. An all-around historically awesome and, at the same time, entertaining movie.

Movie Review: Great Movie
Summary: 4 Stars

I saw "Swing Kids" for the first time, just a few weeks ago. I came here to buy it, and read some of the reviews. Nobody seemed to have seen what I did, the "bottom line" of the movie. Robert Sean Leonard, as Peter, plays a young man forced into the Hitler youth. His friend joins him. The friend soon sees the "benefits" of the Hitler youth, but the more Peter sees, the more he is sure that he wants no part of it. I watched this movie at a time when my own son was having difficulty with kids at school, and I was able to come up with a solution...Stand up for what you believe in, for what you know is right. This is what Peter did, and although he is hauled away in the end, it is hopeful that his non-allegiance to Hitler is passed on to his young brother, and that the torch is carried on from person to person standing up to their beliefs that Hitler was wrong.

Besides, who can NOT Love Robert Sean Leonard?

Movie Review: Great movie...weird ending
Summary: 4 Stars

This actually opened my eyes to what was happening in Germany beside the Holocaust and...wow...Swing danceing forbidden? That's interesting. I love history and this is something i would want to definetly talk about as a teacher beside the whole Holocaust.
Unfortunately the ending really left me hanging. My friends and I in choir kept yelling at the tv to tell us what happened to Peter (was that his name? i cant remember), and everybody else. They should have been a little more informative about what was gonna happen and stuff like that.
The suicidal scene was pretty disturbing and sad. It's too bad he had to end his life the way he did.
All in all this is a really good movie. I suggest it to anybody who like learning something new from WWII.

Movie Review: The Dancing is Great...
Summary: 4 Stars

I have to admit that I have been bit by the jitterbug, so any movie with dancing is great. After I first started lindy hopping I went out and rented this movie and watched it about 4 times in a row. The good thing is that this movie is actually good. Yes, I have heard people say that the plot is pretty dumb--"Who would go to a concentration camp for dancing?" That may be true, but I think the real point was that he was standing up for something that he believed in. I can't say that it is my favorite movie of all times, but I am buying the dvd..it is worth it just for the dancing if nothing else!
