Movie Reviews of Swing KidsMovie Review: AWESOME MOVIE FOR TEACHING WWII Summary: 5 Stars
I teach 11th grade and when we reach WWII I have been looking for a movie which is good enough for the kids to see that doesn't just show blood and guts. Many of the kids can't fathom why an entire nation would just follow a man bent on the destruction of another race. This movie gives them a new viewpoint, a kid's viewpoint, that they can relate to. They can understand that not everyone wanted to go along, not everyone agreed but few were capable of standing up and sticking to their beliefs. The brainwashing techniques, the pressure from peers, family and fear made it easier for Hitler to gain and maintain control of Germany. I begin WWII with a brief explanation of the conditions existing in Europe when Hitler rose to power and then show this movie. My students always enjoy the movie and come away from viewing it with a better understanding of how Hitler got into power. I highly recommend this film for teaching and/or just enjoying.
Movie Review: Historically relevant Summary: 5 Stars
This is a movie that is relevant on at least two levels. It is an important historical lesson in how the Nazi's overwhelmed a segment of German society through innuendo and deceit. Especially important in the role of the Gestapo official. In traditional movies Gestapo officials are stereotypically mean and absurd. In Swing Boys the role is much more realistic and devious. He is a friendly, smiling character who gradually pulls the noose tighter until there is no escaping the Nazi death grip. The movie demonstrates how the "normal" people of society are lured into the anti-social behavior of a regime gone mad. This is an important movie because it's message is timeless, a real lesson in why if we don't learn from history, it is bound to repeat itself. On other notes, the music and dancing are great and offer a nice contrast to the sterility of an unbending political dogma.
Movie Review: A Time In Hell Summary: 5 Stars
This is a film that brings out one of the overlooked aspects to life in Nazi Germany. Almost anyone who has any interest in History or World War 2 know of the Hitler Youth that actually took the place of the Boy Scouts in Nazi Germany. I dare say that few people know about those brave young people that chose to resist and be different at great personal risk and reject the Nazi Creed while following their first love...Swing Music. This Film solidly brings their story to the screen in a dramatic and heartwarming way. The cast in very good and bring the movie off very well. The only drawback to the film is that the actors speak their lines in perfect English. English spoken with a German accent would have added somewhat for those purists among us. Otherwise, the film is excellent and well worth viewing, Go ahead, learn something new!
Movie Review: Great Movie To Learn From Summary: 5 Stars
This movie's "true story" was a little stretched, and I understoond that before I watched the film. Just think about it, how many movies that are out there these days that say "It's a True Story" when in fact, it's mostly based by Hollywood creaters? To me, history is one of my very favorites and I have a hard time when they 'alter' the true stuff.
To get back to the movie, I agree it was a little too much but I learned alot from this thing. It mirrors so much of what everyone is going through in every country in the world. Government Control over all things. It represents a few elect who are not afraid to stand up for what they think is right.
It's a good movie with a piece of realistic style of what Hitler did and that we must never forget.
It's well worth it guys. Please see it.
Movie Review: Seriously Strong Story Treated in a Lighter Way... Summary: 5 Stars
Not just another pre or active World War 2 epic.
Based on real stories, an entire sect of Kids who were entrenched in the music, clothing and social scene of the Jazz Swing Era. This was a lifestyle that wasn't approved of by Adolf Hitler and his Band of Merry Men.
We find life-long friends on opposing sides of the Swing Time Issues. We see hearts breaking on both sides of the dispute.
There are a great deal of facts about the Nazi Party's influence on young children and the older Kids. Directed by a softer hand, the facts come forward without nailing the viewer to a wall and force-feeding, hard-to-take associations between the Nazi Soldiers and the German civilians.
The film was thoroughly entertaining and informative too. Not a bruise to be found.
