Movie Reviews of Swept From the Sea

Movie Review: Swept From The Sea
Summary: 5 Stars

Grat film and very well fimed with extremely good perfomances from the all of the cast.

Movie Review: Getting my feet wet.
Summary: 4 Stars

This is a sad little gem of a movie. I really liked that the plot explored more themes than just romantic love. The story had as much to do with issues of identity, community, and fidelity. In my opinion, there were a few technical and narrative flaws that kept the film from attaining the level of greatness that it should have achieved, especially when considering the quality of the performances. The slight quiver in Weisz's voice was right on target as was Perez's accent. The rest of the illustrious cast was more than capable. Considering the type of story and the setting, I can't help but think that a three-part mini-series would have been a more appropriate treatment than a feature film. I emerged from watching the movie with a feeling that there was a lot more to explore beneath the surface of each character.

Movie Review: Good....Could have been better
Summary: 4 Stars

I really enjoyed this movie however one of the more interesting parts of the movie was not fully developed. Ian Mckellen's character was supposed to be homosexual .....he is in love with Vincent Perez's character. It was a pretty subtle subplot in the movie and while I was watching it I was thinking....hmmmm is Ian Mckellen's character gay? I read Roger Ebert's review of the movie on [...]. In his article Ebert says the movie could have been more interesting if this plot was further developed....I agree. I really enjoyed the movie but I thought Ian Mckellen's character was very interesting and if his desires were further explored it could have turned this fairly ordinary romance movie into an extraordinary movie.

Movie Review: Good
Summary: 4 Stars

I liked this movie more then I thought I would. In short Amy an odd country girl who everyone thinks is a witch falls in love wiht Yanko an eastern european who washes ashore after a shipwreck. The realationship between Amy and Yanko was heartfelt and sweet, and both the actors who played the parts were very good in their roles. I enjoyed the dynamic of Yanko's tutor being jeaolous of his realationship with Amy and the normal worries of Amy and Yanko that their son was going to be treated poorly because of their status in town. Overall it was a good movie I'm happy I watched but not something I would watch over and over again, or really have intense thoughts on for a few days since.

Movie Review: Balm on every outcast's heart
Summary: 4 Stars

This is coming from someone who spent much of her childhood in Amy Foster's shoes. What odd girl doesn't dream of a handsome non-judgmental foreigner appearing from the sea? If only that were the fate of ALL strange girls who don't belong in their community.

My only criticism is the treatment of the Yanko's ethnicity. We never find out for sure if he's Polish, Russian or Ukrainian. I guess, to the majority of American viewers, Eastern Europe is one big savage country, where everyone dances hopak (a Cossack dance).
