Movie Reviews of Sweet and Lowdown

Movie Review: Loved this movie!!!
Summary: 5 Stars

Sean Penn stars along with Samantha Morton (both were nominated for Oscars) in this classic jazz-age tale directed by Woody Allen. Penn's character, a fictional jazz guitarist is so entirely believable and interwoven with true jazz history (helped along by a great jazz soundtrack) that for a while, I spent time looking for books and info about Emmett Ray. Only later did I discover that he never really existed. Egocentric, odd, and engagingly funny, "Ray" keeps this story moving with a series of romances and mis-adventures worthy of Don Quixote. People might be tempted to overlook this gem as simply another Woody Allen movie, but to do so is a huge mistake! Five years after it's release date, it remains a largely undiscovered comedic masterpiece worthy of rental or purchase. I've personally watched this movie countless times since....

Movie Review: Sweet & Upbeat!
Summary: 5 Stars

This is the best Woody Allen movie I've seen. I enjoyed every moment. The characters were well cast, superbly acted and the plot cleverly formed, as if it were the documentary of a real guitarist.

One of the biggest stars of the movie is the music! If you like guitar music "Sweet and Lowdown" is a must! We bought the soundtrack CD right after seeing the DVD. No mention is made, in any review I've seen, of Henry Aldren ... the guitarist who did the actual guitar solos supposedly done by Sean Penn as Emmett Ray. His technique is awesome. The styles are fashioned after that of Django Rheinhart but Aldren's talent is still there and the music is wonderful.

I intend seeing this movie several times before I tire of it. And the music I'll probably never get tired of hearing.

Movie Review: I really think this should have won the academy awards
Summary: 5 Stars

I hope that Sean Penn and Woodie work together again aned soon. This was a real treasure.

Samantha Morton should have won a best actress even though she had a non-speaking roll. She plays a mute girl friend of Penn's character. Her communication thru facial expressions alone in the film shoud have won Allen a best director

This is a story of a jazz guitar player who is a failure at everything, but his music. He lives in fear of the best guitar player in the world who is his only rival. Penn's character is a kelptomaniac, a pimp, a drunk and womanizer. Allen shows that for all this the man makes only one great mistake in his life. A mistake which no degree of talent can rectify.

I hope this cast and Allen work together again soon.

Movie Review: is that all i can give it-5 stars?
Summary: 5 Stars

Samantha Morton is so good in this you'll cry.
you'll laugh too so how can you beat that?
Sean Penn gives a fantastic portrayal of the worlds'
2nd best guitarist who also happens to be a jerk.
Uma Thurman is great as a writer exploring every
possible motive into human behavior.
Woody and several other talking heads give
periodical narration throughout the movie.
I saw this movie when it came out and was struck
what an excellent story it was with such superb acting.
and seeing it again recently many years later it did not
loose one bit of it's dramatic or comedic touches.
absolutely one of Woody's best!

Movie Review: Beautiful! and fun
Summary: 5 Stars

I hate Woody Allen. I can take some of his movies, but only the ones that aren't so obviously and directly vehicles for him to exorcise his neuroses and insecurities. That said, I LOVED this movie, and recommend it highly. The music, along with the sets and the cinematography were beautiful and idyllic depression-era Americana. Every shot was obviously well thought out, and perfect. On top of this, the story was simple, progressed at a nice pace, and had a nice bittersweet (but not quite tragic) ending. The parallels to Allen's life and career are there, but subtle enough that you have to be familiar with him, and his work in order to notice. 5 Stars!
