Movie Reviews of Sweet Home AlabamaMovie Review: How can you not love Reese? Summary: 5 Stars
This is a really cute movie - I like it a lot. Reese Whitherspoon plays the part of Melanie Carmicheal, an up-and-coming NY city fashion designer who gets engaged with the most eligible bachelor in town (The son of a high-profile judge, the JFK Jr. type)... But Melanie has a few skeletons in her closet that she must hige much better before she walks down the isle with Mr. Right.... She travels back home to a small town in Alabama to get -gasp!- a divorce from her childhood-sweetheart/husband. When she gets there she is mortified of her past: all the two-steppin', twangin', hillbillies that she grew up with are totally beneath her. and she declares war on the husband who refuses to give her a divorce. But, after a few days of being back home, she starts to realize that what she thought she wanted may not be what she wants at all. Reese Whitherspoon is so cute in this movie. And Candice Burgeon plays a great b!tch (the future mother-in-law from hell!) It's a really good romantic comedy that most guys won't even mind watching (Mine didn't!) The dvd comes with an alternate ending too.
Movie Review: Funny and heartwarming Summary: 5 Stars
Reese Witherspoon gives an unforgettable performance as Melanie (Smooter) Carmichael, a New York fashion designer that has come out on her own and is making a name for herself. She is dating one of New Yorks most eligible bachelors when he proposes to her. This bachelor's mother just happens to be Candace Bergen who is the mayor of New York. Candance provides a great performance as the snooty mayor who is always the politician. Her performance brought me back to the old Murphy Brown days. Needless to say, Melanie hasn't been divorced from her childhood sweetheart and now is trying to get the divorce before the wedding. The events that lead up to the "divorce" and "wedding" are hysterical. Reese's performance proves that you "can" go back home.Sweet Home Alabama is, whatever one is calling, a chick flick but it holds it's own and is funny & heartwarming. Hearing the song "Sweet Home Alabama" brought back memories and, unfortunately, made me feel old, but that's nothing against the movie. This is a good matinee movie or even an evening movie with a bunch of your friends.
Movie Review: Love it! Summary: 5 Stars
I just finished watching Sweet Home Alabama and I just fell in love with it! Reese Witherspoon is great in this movie and has all the things every girl loves. Melanie is a rising fashion designer in New York who becomes engaged to Andrew, New York's mayor's rich and attractive son. Since she is ashamed of her background, she goes alone to Alabama to face her past, where she tries to make her husband, Jake (I LOVE YOU JOSH LUCAS!!!) sign the divorce papers. When he refuses to sign them, Melanie slowly realizes that the background that she had been trying so hard to hide had been the right place for her all along. Who does she choose in the end? I'm not going to tell you (Even though it's probably obvious from the way I've been describing the story, hehe), but Sweet Home Alabama kept me guessing all the way until the VERY END, which I loved so much. The music is really cool too, even though I've never been a huge fan of country music. Everyone's accents in the movie was pretty cool too! I definitely recommend this movie to everyone, it's a must-see!!!
Movie Review: One of the movies in my rotation! Summary: 5 Stars
Again, my disclaimer: I am not the best writer here, so bear with me!I saw this movie at the theatre when it came out and found myself watching it over and over again on cable. In fact, I watched it 4 time last week on STARZ. The movie has a simple plot: Melanie is from the country and is now an up and coming fashion designer. She wants to marry NYC's most eligible bachelor, Andrew, the son of the mayor. However, she is still married to a high school sweetheart, Jake. She has to go back to her hometown to get her divorce, but finds that she still has feelings for Jake. I think the purpose of the movie is to give the viewers enjoyment for an hour and a half. We aren't saving the world, but we sure feel good which watching this movie. I love Patrick Dempsey and it is great to see him looking so sophisticated and suave. Josh Lucas isn't really a newcomer (he was in A Beautiful Mind) but he is able to star in this one (think Matthew McConaghey meets Paul Newman). And of course, Reese Witherspoon does a great job as the country girl/hot shot city girl!
Movie Review: Love is Patient! Summary: 5 Stars
"Sweet Home Alabama" is one of those light romantic comedies in which everyone wins, and all of the actors do a tremendous job portraying their characters. Based on some of the reviews, however, a few folks seem to have misunderstood the ending. If you've not seen the film, you might want to skip the remainder of this review. Just to clarify, in the coon dog cemetery scene, Mel tells Jake that she's drawn to both New York and Alabama. Jake says, "Since when does it have to be one or the other? You can have roots AND wings, Mel." In other words, he's suggesting that it's possible to live in both worlds. Based on the shots in the closing credits, I think it's safe to assume that, in the movie, Mel continues as a designer, but also has a life with Jake and their future family. I think it's great that they got back together after seven years, and I'd like to see more films with this type of happy ending, no matter how "unrealistic" or "sappy" in some persons' views. "Love is very patient and kind... love does not demand its own way."
