Movie Review: Tim Burton's best so far! Summary: 5 StarsBest movie of the year by far. The 2-disc DVD is definitely worth buying, and is full of informative, entertaining features. Helena Bonham-Carter is absolutely wonderful as Mrs Lovett, and Johnny Depp is a surprisingly good singer. Alan Rickman is perfectly cast as the judge, and Timothy Spall is wonderfully, skin-crawlingly disgusting as Beedle. Tim Burton's depiciton of Victorian era London is visually beautiful, and at the same time makes you feel that you could catch the plague just from looking at it.
Movie Review: Tim Burton's finest hour Summary: 5 StarsThe genius of Sondheim's operetta, SWEENEY TODD, has long been acknowledged, and now filmmaker Tim Burton has brought it to the screen with his wonderful flair for the macabre. It's a near perfect match of filmmaker to material, and the result is Burton's finest, most focused film.
Movie Review: A Bloody Great Musical Summary: 5 StarsHonestly, I often hate horror films. They have so many gross zombies and visuals these days that I hate watching most of them (especially "Jeepers Creepers"). But some of the best bloody horror films are so honorable that stay in my memory for the longest time.
And, believe it or not, "Sweeney Todd" is that kind of horror film. It is my favorite movie of 2007. There's nothing better than watching Johnny Depp sing happy melodies while he cuts the throats of gentlemen and politicians. For some reason, it's so relieving to watch them die, because I really haven't liked too many politicians lately.
Don't ask me why, but there's something hilarious about listening to Helena Bonham Carter sing about making meat pies out of the rich people walking on the street. It's gory to watch Depp slit their throats, but I enjoyed watching Depp's character, Sweeney Todd, and Mrs. Lovett make mince meat out of them. No, really. They make meat pies out of them.
I hope I didn't scare you away with these gross details, because this is a great musical about rotten people. This is a great musical about rotten judicial officials with sexist attitudes. This is a great musical about the rotten people who dream obsessively of killing them. In this case, Sweeny, also known as Benjamin Barker, was unfairly accused of outrageous crimes. Judge Turpin raped his wife, and according to Mrs. Lovett, Benjamin's wife committed suicide. Now after his 15 years in prison, Barker is out for revenge against Judge Turpin, the man who punished him and killed his wife.
This is also a dark comedy that takes a great twist when Mrs. Lovett convinces Todd to kill the rich hypocrites who make the poor beggars miserable. It's true that they shouldn't hoard all the money, but there's something outrageously wrong about actually killing them. Thankfully, "Sweeny Todd" is one of the few movies that enables viewers to watch the rich people get killed, with the grateful knowledge that this is just a movie (thank goodness).
I'm not going to give away the ending either, but I will point out that there is a big surprise in the end about Sweeny Todd's wife that reveals many things. Most importantly, it shows how shallow and gruesome revenge is. In a way, the movie feels far more morally just than "There Will Be Blood" or "No Country for Old Men." And there is even more stunning end to Sweeny's killing spree that puts everything into perspective.
Even though this is a very bloody movie, it is a musical as well. And for some reason, it's actually amusing to watch Sweeny prepare for killing Turpin in the barber's chair while they're both singing about "Pretty Women." All the dark sardonic humor was so funny that the movie didn't feel like a violent film.
However, I do have to say that immediately after watching this film, I might think twice about eating meat pies for awhile...
[Edit: I just listened to the broadway musical album and I have to say that the musical had a completely different tone. I enjoyed the singing in the musical more than the movie (especially Angela Langsbury). While I still give this a high rating, keep in mind that the movie is much more grim than the musical, with geysers of blood coming from peoples' necks.]
Movie Review: Good but............... Summary: 4 StarsThe movie really grabs you, firstly the story line about injustice in a grimy London where the extremes of poverty meet the extremes of the high life of the time.
We have all at sometime heard about the actions of Sweeny Todd and the movie really illustrates this although rather gory!
Johnny Depp is one incredible actor and plays the part of Sweeny Todd as if he has a wee bit of Sweeny in him!!!!!!
While the movie is in essence a musical it's not for kids!
