Movie Reviews of Sweeney Todd - The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (Two-Disc Special Collector's Edition)

Movie Review: BORING! Just stone BORING!
Summary: 1 Stars

Dearest-On-Earth and I were all pavloved for "Sweeney," after "Fear And Loathing," "Blow," and/or all the "Pirates." But after viewing "Sweeney" - in abject horror and shock - we both agreed that A) In "Smokey And The Bandit," when Sally Fields inquired of Burt Reynolds, "do you like Stephen Sondheim?," his reply - NO! - was entirely and altogether appropriate; and B) I guess "we SHOULD have known better," because English movies have a justifiable reputation for being stultifyingly BORING. Unnecessarily explicit, too - I mean, snuff films aren't really enjoyable.

Movie Review: The Perfect Tim Burton Film
Summary: 3 Stars

SWEENEY TODD is the perfect Tim Burton film. It's dark and bleak and awash in blood with a terrific performance from Johnny Depp.

The only problem is that the film is dark and bleak and awash in blood. Unless you're into that kind of thing.

Although I said this was the perfect Tim Burton film, it's not my favorite. I still think his best was ED WOOD (Martin Landau won the Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his dead-on performance as Bela Lugosi). SLEEPY HOLLOW was also very bloody but paper thin. MARS ATTACKS traded blood for Martian ray guns but didn't hit the mark when it came to mixing humor and horror. The two BATMAN movies he did proved that he can't film an action scene to save his life. (I accidentally caught the ending of PLANET OF THE APES and it was such a head-scratching variation of the original shocker ending that I haven't felt any desire to see the rest).

After watching a Tim Burton film, I usually think: "Good...but that was 20 minutes too long."
And I didn't think that with SWEENEY TODD. It's visually dazzling, the performances are fun (Sascha Baron Cohen was perfect), the music doesn't intrude on the story (I'm not a big fan of the musical). Johnny Depp won a Golden Globe and he deserved it.
But it is dark and bloody. I don't remember how many heads rolled in SLEEPY HOLLOW (a lot, I'm sure) but it felt like a lot of throats were slit in SWEENEY TODD, spraying blood all over everything.
As in a lot of Burton's work, you watch a scene that splashes gore everywhere and wonder, "Is that funny?" Considering what happens to Helena Bonham Carter's character, it's hard to find a good chuckle when her last scene is so convincingly portrayed.

Still, a well-crafted, entertaining film.

I haven't seen the original stage show but I understand that a final musical number is left out of the film version: the ghosts of Sweeney Todd and the Helena Bonham Carter charcter return to sing one final number before the curtain falls.

Movie Review: There Will be BLOOD...
Summary: 4 Stars

I have always been a fan of Johnny Depp but was very hesitant to try this movie because i really don't have the patience to sit through musicals, with the singing and the prancing around the stage and what not. However let me tell you this is no simple light hearted musical!....oh yes there will be BLOOD!!

I don't want to give away to much of the story but ill explain the basic premise. The story begins with a Barber and his lovely wife, so lovely in fact that the Barber is thrown in jail for no reason by a corrupt judge who is looking to take his lovely wife for himself. 15 years later the jaded Barber returns with vengeance on his mind and madness in his blades. So thus begins his tale of terror and bloody murder.

This movie/musical is almost all singing with some dialog mixed in here and there. All of the actors in this movie are not exactly singers, but they still perform very well. The list includes:

-Sweeny Todd- Johnny Depp
-Ms Lovett- Helena Bonham Carter(Harry Potter-Bellatrix Lestrange)
-Judge Turpin- Alan Rickman(Harry Potter- Prof. Snape)

There is one negative that i would like to point out though. I'm not sure if its a technical problem on the DVD or what but sometimes it can be a little hard to make out what the actors are saying when they are talking and singing. I found that i had to rewind a part or two to catch what they were saying.

Overall this is a great movie that if you have any interest in horror you should definitely give it a shot and if you a Johnny Depp fan you should give him the benefit of the doubt and watch the movie. Just try to to get squeamish when the blood starts to flow....

Movie Review: watch with subtitles
Summary: 2 Stars

if you can't follow along because of the singing, or just can't take the musical anymore, mute it, and put the subtitles on. i was able to follow the story and see exactly what they are saying.
