Movie Reviews of SwashbucklerMovie Review: Shaw / Jones / Bujold swing a blade Summary: 4 Stars
This was an attempt to revive the pirate movie. It didn't. But it was a great attempt.
Red Ned Lynch (Robert Shaw) is the captain of the Blarney Cock. He loots British ships in the Caribbean. His first mate is Nick Debrette (James Earl Jones).
The main British island is under the rule of Lord Durant (Peter Boyle) and his naïve aid (Beau Bridges). He confiscates the Barnett plantation putting out Lady Barnett and daughter Jane (Genevieve Bujold). Jane is determined to get revenge.
Durant is determined to catch Red Ned and sets a trap but this is a swashbuckler film and good must triumph.
This is a beautifully made film. The Blarney Cock is the Bounty from the remake. The production design and costumes are top quality. And despite a weak script, the performances all around are great. As one critic said, Genevieve Bujold uses her French accent to great use in this film. And Geoffrey Holder's return to acting is sublime as the knife wielding adventurer.
You won't put this on your classics list but you will pop this DVD in when you want a fun afternoon.
DVD EXTRA: Making of featurette made at the time of filming.
Movie Review: A great pirate romp Summary: 4 Stars
I first saw this movie in a double feature with Jaws (!) and with a good friend. We loved it. It's still an old fave, a great sendup of classic Errol Flynn Pirate movies. And it's just good fun on its own. Wonderful interaction between the actors, Bujold is very interesting as the feisty young female who can hold her own. Lots of humorous dialog and jokes and visual and verbal plays on the jokes (a favorite scene: Ned and Nick are waiting for a certain coach, and the delightful play on the limerick "there was a young girl named Starkey...". Ned is sitting with his back to a tree, looks up at Nick and says: "There's a coach coming; 2 horses; no 4 horses! [Huge grin] One black...one white...and two Khaki!" Camera pans back to the coach carrying Folly, and indeed, 4 horses: one black, one white and two dun.
While this may not be a perfect film, it is wonderfully entertaining, and I can recommend it to anyone who wants to see a fun pirate film (even if it is only to tide you over until Pirates of the Caribbean:Dead Man's Chest comes out.)
Movie Review: Just for the fun of it Summary: 4 Stars
This movie was one I saw when it first came out in the 70's. I loved it then and still love it. It's not a great plot, not great historically speaking, and it didn't have the best dialog in the world, but it was great because it was just meant for the sheer joy of it.
The best thing in this movie was it had one of the most difficult stunts at the time, the scene where the carriage goes off the cliff with Robert Shaw and Genevieve Bujold still on it. I loved that stunt.
The music was spectacular and even today I can hear it in my head when I think of this movie. Can't wait to get it on DVD for my collection.
Movie Review: A Campy romp.... Summary: 4 Stars
Yes, it's campy, yes, it's fluffy and yes, it's a fun movie. Robert Shaw and James Earl Jones play wonderfully together, Genevieve Bujold is one very very sexy leading lady. I thought though, that this movie ended with Major Folley being presented to the new governere who turns out to be, hold your breath, the pirate? maybe I'm confusing this with robin hood. Anyway - a great ride all the way through.
Movie Review: A fun movie Summary: 4 Stars
I saw this movie years ago and always remebered it. As a fan of Errol Flynn and other great "swashbucklers", I totally appreciated the tounge-in-cheek storyline. This was one of Robert Shaw's last pictures, a great actor who died too soon. Genvieve Bujold was never lovlier and Peter Boyles' evil Count Durant is a perfect villan. A great film if you like adventure, sword fights, and comedy.
