Movie Reviews of Swashbuckler

Movie Review: Shaw Yo Ho'd in 1957
Summary: 5 Stars

SWASHBUCKLER was obviously made to cash in on the hot property of Robert Shaw's Quint in JAWS. But we older, hard core Shaw fans remember it as a continuation of a role he'd created 20 years before in the British TV series "The Buccaneers" (available on DVD) -- Capt Dan Tempest, reformed Pirate/caring Privateer (who occasionally had his scenes handed back to him by his co-star, Peter Hammond). A charming series, it made Shaw "A Star" on both sides of The Pond.

Swashbuckler IS Capt Dan Tempest. Quint is Capt Dan Tempest. Red Grant is Capt Dan Tempest on steroids.

I hope Shaw had a ball doing a breezy role in an outlandish Yo Ho Flick because I sure had fun watching it.

Movie Review: Still My Favorite Pirate Adventure Movie
Summary: 5 Stars

This movie is full of action, comedy, and adventure. It's great to see actors such as James Earl Jones (Voice of Darth Vader), Peter Boyle (Everybody Loves Raymond) and Beau Bridges (SG-1) as they were when they were very young! The chemistry of "brothers" between Jones and Robert Shaw is fun and real. The camaraderie, revelry, sword-fighting, and over-all setting in beautiful Jamaica is worth the trip. I loved it when it first came out and I was 10 and I still love it now! Has a fun storyline, may be for older audiences to understand references or jokes. Definitely for those who like pirate movies, fantasy, or light-hearted shows.

Movie Review: The grandest pirate movie indeed!
Summary: 5 Stars

It's a shame 'Swashbuckler' will probably never recieve the respect it deserves. While in recent years the pirate movie has enjoyed a rebound thanks to the Orlando Bloom pirate tale Pirates of the Carribean, i feel this 1976 swashbuckler is a whole lot better. The story centers around a pirate captain and his best friend played by James Earl Jones. They team up with a woman who can swash and buckle herself in order to overthrow the evil Lord Durant and free the politcal prisoners. While being a little short on plot, it is very thick on action and adventure, and the countless swordfight scenes are the best I've ever seen.

Movie Review: JUST AN ALL AROUND FUN-FILLED PIRATE ADVENTURE
Summary: 5 Stars

THIS IS ONE ROBERT SHAW'S MOST COOLEST CHARACTERS SINCE HIS BELOVED CHARACTER QUINT FROM JAWS CAME INTO OUR CINEMATIC LIVES...HE WAS TRULY A REAL TALENTED ACTOR AND ACCOMPLISHED AUTHOR AS WELL. ANYWAY, HIS CHARACTER NED LYNCH WAS BASED A TRUE LIFE PIRATE CAPTAIN WHO CONTROLLED THE WATERS OF THE CARIBBEAN SEA FOR WORTHY SHIPS TO BE TAKEN FOR HIS PRIZE. SHAW DELIVERED SUCH A TRUE TO LIFE PIRATE CAPTAIN BUT HE DID HAVE SOME PRACTICE WAY BACK IN THE DAY WHEN HAD HIS OWN TV SHOW CALLED THE BUCCANEER. SHAW WAS PROBABLY MY MOST FAVORITE ACTOR AND HE ALWAYS HELD HIS OWN IN ANY PICTURE HE WAS IN. ROBERT SHAW RULES!

Movie Review: Grandest Pirate Movie Ever!
Summary: 5 Stars

I saw this movie when it first came out way back in the day. I was 7. This one stuck with me. I remember by little brother and I re-enacting the scenes in the movie, especially when we got those plastic souveneir pirate swords from the Thanksgiving parade. I was thrilled to find this on DVD. I snapped it up right away and shared it with my family. My sons loved it as much as I did. It was great seeing it again, and being older, I understood the plot better. I am a big fan of pirate movies. This is hands down my favorite. Get this one!
