Movie Reviews of SuperstitionMovie Review: A great and very underrated low budget 80's horror film. Summary: 5 StarsThis was an excellent and very underrated low budget 80's horror film, I must admit that I had not heard of this flick before, I discovered it when I was searching through some obscure 80's horror, this flick managed to turn up so I decided to check it out and I'm glad I did. This one started off with a decapitated head that explodes in a microwave followed by a window chopping a teenager in half and that just happens during the first ten minutes, now that's how you start a movie!. James Houghton stars as David Thompson, the new reverend in a town that contains a haunted house where mysterious deaths keep occurring. Upon visiting the house he meets the token crazy old lady and her token mentally challenged son (who is a mute in this case). The pieces begin to fall together that the grounds were once the site of a witch-burning and the witch still haunts the property and harms those who try to occupy the house. David of course is a skeptic and has decided to put another priest named George and his family into the house until they can find a permanent residence as they have just moved into town. The doubts of the reality of a ghost witch begin to wear off after someone loses a fight with a circular saw, a teenage girl is grabbed by a severed hand while swimming and a variety of other strange and scary events happen. This is one of those flicks that may not be the most original story in the world but makes up for it with inventive kills, some great gory make-up effects and an unpredictable plot where everyone has the potential to meet a gruesome end. We are also treated to a flashback sequence to 1692 that looks like it came out of a bad Hammer movie but was still a surprise that I was not expecting. I really found this to be an entertaining haunted house flick that I liked more than the original Amityville Horror but I wouldn't put it on the same level as Poltergeist but it was still a brilliant, gory and fun 80's horror flick that does not disappoint it was also fast paced and unintentionally hilarious at times, I highly recommend this.
Summary of SuperstitionThe Victims who died were the lucky ones. Something horrible is happening at the old house on Mill Road. A series of ghastly 'accidents' has occurred near the site where a witch was drowned centuries earlier. But when an alcoholic minister and his family move into the cursed residence, an idealistic young priest (James Houghton) and a cynical police detective (Albert Salmi of EMPIRE OF THE ANTS) start their own investigation into the unexplained violence. Has the daughter of Satan returned for a rampage of vengeance? Will the laws of the Church be strong enough to cast out this blood-crazed demon? And if Evil has truly found a new home, is the entire neighborhood headed straight to Hell? Lynn Carlin (DEATHDREAM), Larry Pennell (BUBBA HO- TEP) and Heidi Bohay co-star in this gruesome tale of possession and the occult, packed with nasty splashes of awesome '80s gore!
