Movie Review: Curtis Mayfield's soundtrack is the real star
Summary: 3 Stars

I've been a fan of Superfly as soundtrack for years. Curtis Mayfield is the man, crooner, poet, and funkateer all put into one wise package. The lyrics of his songs for Superfly tell the story for me better than the plot itself at times.

So in figuring out this flick in my own mind, it was hard for me to see how beyond the soundtrack it was so great. Part of this is me facing the hard facts of how low budget it was for the first time. The chase scenes go on too long for me and there's a lot of footage of guys just running around in their cars. There were some real gaps in the story for me.

But ultimately I just wasn't really connecting with Priest. Yeah, he wants to get out of the game. But he's also high all the time. That's the hardest thing for me. There's a certain glamour in how he balances his women and how he flips the man's script. But he's flippin high all the time. If he's really beyond the game and the existential hero/antihero who can fly above the dope industry, I just think he'd avoid sampling the product.

You've got to see this film because I think part of the reason I'm less blown away by it is that it's the foundation for some modern blaxploitation films I'd dig more.

But Curtis is and always will be the man. Check it out if for no other reason to see how his cuts are the film. Plus there's a scene with him lipsynching "Pusherman" in a bar.

Movie Review: One last time around
Summary: 3 Stars

Ron O'Neill is Priest, a big time pusher looking to make one last score with some "superfly" cocaine that has attracted authorities. Parks takes you on a tour of the mean streets with some compelling performances by Julius Harris and Sheila Frazier. Parks also offers his trademark photo montages, set to the groovy music of Curtis Mayfield. The movie presses all the right buttons but doesn't have the grim determination of Shaft, which I think is a much better movie.

Movie Review: 70's style
Summary: 3 Stars

I thought this was a decent blaxploitation film. Drugs and money isn't everything to preist, the main character in the film who wants to get out of the pusher business. It's kind of slow but I still like it

Movie Review: Fantasic flick, but atrocious audio
Summary: 2 Stars

I write this review in regard to the DVD version of this movie in particular. Superfly is indeed a great movie, from its gritty ambiance, outlandish costumes, superb soundtrack, unsentimental dialogue and straight-up action. However, the sound quality on the DVD is quite poor, which is an absolute shame in light of the music that is a genuine reflection of its place and era. Even with the volume turned up much higher than for any other DVDs I have, the dialogue and music were still extremely muffled. While I am usually not hung up on technical features, the poor quality of the audio substantially diminished my enjoyment of an otherwise classic movie, which explains the above rating.

Movie Review: Superfly
Summary: 2 Stars

I enjoyed the movie when it first came out in the early 70's and had been looking for it & was told by a firend where I could find it...was glad I did but the quality of the movie isn't what it should be & to me it seemed like there were a few scenes missing from it......all in all I am glad I found it but I thought it would be better quality
