Movie Reviews of Super TroopersMovie Review: Couldnt stop laughing Summary: 5 Stars
Super Troopers is by far one of the funniest movies I have ever seen. I had no idea who the guys from Broken Lizard were, but as soon as I saw the movie I wanted to find out what other ideas they have come up with. If you have not seen the movie I highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys low brow humor with a little bit of sophistication behind it. Most jokes in the movie I could not stop laughing and sometimes it brought tears to my eyes. Super Troopers is one of those movies that will be compared to when other comedy movie come out.
It has become an instant classic, I have found that most college students have it in their dorm rooms or close by. What the basic idea of the movie is following a group of state troopers and their wacky antics. I know it doesn't sound that funny but the guys from Broken Lizard have preformed some pretty funny stuff. The cast of characters in the movie makes for some amazing laughs and lots of thrills along the way.
There is a plot where they have to find about some drug runners but that takes a set behind all of their antics while on duty trying to protect and serve.
The antagonists in the movie are the local cops that give the Super Troopers trouble and always seemed to be around where there is trouble. There even is a little romance between the Super Troopers from the state highway patrol and the local police force of the town. Both sides hate each other with similar fashion and always try to screw over the guys. There is also a little tension between the members of the state patrol and themselves.
Officer Farva in the movie is one of the funniest characters. He is the gun ho full out cop mentality. The problem with officer Farva is that no one likes him because for one he is a jerk, and two he just is not funny. That is the funny part about it though; is the he adds the comic relief to an already funny group of patrolmen. He got in a little trouble in the start of the movie and is put on radio detail. You are not quite sure about why he got into trouble but at the end of it you see just why he was put on the radio to serve out his punishment. Another one of the members of the group is officer Ramathorn.
He has been on the force a while and knows why they have to commit pranks all the time, to keep themselves from going crazy with the boring line of work they do. Ramathorn has a chugging contest with the rookie of the group. It is not a beer chugging contest but a syrup chugging contest. Ramathorn and the rookie have to chug a whole bottle of syrup and the first one to finish it wins. Again the idea in itself is unusual but the guys of Broken Lizard make it work with their abstract comments about what is the best way of getting the syrup down the fastest.
This movie almost never comes out of my DVD player; it is one of the only movies that I actually enjoy watching over and over again. Even when it was put on to television I could not stop myself from dropping everything I had to do and watch it, while the movie was still in my DVD player. This is a worth while movie to buy. Still there are some parts in the movie that are not so funny, but it was still a well made movie. If you're a fan of comedy and enjoy laughing so hard you might just cry then this movie would be the one for you. So I strongly recommend that this DVD be added to anyone's collection and will become an instant favorite movie. If for some reason you do not think it was that great than you might want to find a different genre of movies. This movie will never get old and can be passed around to everyone that enjoys laughing at stupid humor. I personally will never get tired of the movie no matter how many times I see it.
Movie Review: Hilarious comedy that never lets up Summary: 5 Stars
Super Troopers is one of those movies that no matter how many times you watch it, you're still going to think it's funny. It's the story of 5 Vermont State Troopers fighting to keep their station open. They then go into a war with the Local Police who seem to try to take credit for everything they do, or sabatage their progress. After a while though things about the local cops start to get suspicious, and it seems something that's not exactly legal may be going on with them. The movie is written by "Broken Lizard", a team of 5 writers who play the five state troopers in the movie.
The best part of the movie by far is the characters. The 5 state troopers are each unique and different, and are absolutely hilarious.Among them you have Rabbit, the rookie cop who doesn't really know that much about his job yet, Mac the crazy one who will do absolutely anything, Foster the one with a love affair going on with the local cop Ursula, and of course Farva the funniest part of the entire movie. It also seems that the troopers don't take their job seriously, as they like to pull pranks on their unlucky traffic victims, like saying meow ten times to a driver who's been pulled over, no wonder their station is being shut down. However if you buy this movie for only one thing, you have to buy it for Officer Rob Farva. He is perhaps the funniest character I've ever watched. The things he says and does are just outrageously funny, and you could very well picture this guy being a state trooper. If you watch the credits after the movie, you see Farva's famous school bus incident which is talked about in the movie. One of my favorite things that Farva does is when they are at a dinner party, he says to Mac "hey you wanna go hit for hit?" and Mac hits him downstairs. All Farva can say "Oh I did not specify". Haha. The pranks and other gags are also very funny, and enough to keep you entertained for the hour and a half or so the movie lasts. The underlying story isn't that bad either.
If you like comedies, I don't see how you couldn't like Super Troopers. It's definitely one of the funniest I've ever seen. I think the people who don't like it either read into it too or expect something else, and the movie never really gets a fair chance with them. Officer Rod Farva is definitely worth the price of admission though, and this one is much better than
"Broken Lizard"'s latest "Club Dread"
Movie Review: Cops Rock! Summary: 5 Stars
In classic, Animal House style, this movie about a squad of bizarre state highway troopers is sure to entertain. While it appears to be what some may call "frat boy" humor, I find that many different kinds of people with a good sense of humor can enjoy this film.
Super Troopers is about a group of Vermont State Troopers, led by Capt. John O'Hagen (Brian Cox) whose department is in danger of shutting down. The governor (Lynda Carter) doesn't have a big budget to spend on police work, and the more professional local cops, lead by Chief Bruce Grady (Daniel von Bargen), are the more likely candidates to get the money in the upcoming budget overhaul. And, to the casual observor, it would be the right choice. The state cops have a tendancy to play games with the people they pull over; one game involves one cop repeating everything his partner says, while another has one of the troopers saying "meow" instead of "now" in an attempt to drive the pulled-over motorist crazy. And when dealing with stoned teens, they really have a blast. While officers Ramathorne (Jay Chandrasekhar), Foster (Paul Soter), Mac (Steve Lemme), and "Rabbit" Roto (Erik Stolhanske) do everything in good humor, the force's black sheep, Officer Rodney Farva (Kevin Heffernan) tends to go too far and get himself suspended and give the department a bad name (he jumped a fast food clerk for messing with him).
But when a murder on the highway is connected with a drug ring, the Super Troopers find a way to redeem themselves and get back in the governor's good graces- as long as the meddling local cops don't solve the case first.
This film is hilarious. While most of the humor is pretty "dumb", there are a few intelligent things here and there, but it is the sheer wackiness of it all that makes it great. The romance between Foster and local cop Ursula Hanson (Marisa Coughlan) is great, especially the prank call sequence. Although, for people who aren't into crude humor, this won't be your kind of movie. There is a lot of drug-based humor, some nudity, and gratuitous use of the f-word. If you can get past that, I highly reccomend this movie.
Movie Review: It's delicious! Summary: 5 Stars
This is probably the funniest movie that I've seen in the last few years. I started watching it on cable with very low expectations, and I found myself laughing non-stop for the next hour and a half. Basically the movie follows the antics of 5 Vermont state troopers who enjoy playing pranks on motorists, each other, and their arch-rivals, the local police. There is a loose plot having to do with a cache of drugs, and a sweet romantic sub-plot as well, but all these elements really take a back seat to the clever and good-natured humor. One of the highlights for me is the opening sequence in which the troopers pull over and mess around with 3 stoner kids. After pulling them over, they take off without warning and then back up and order them to pull over again. The frightened and drugged-out kids don't know what to do since they're already pulled over. Probably the funniest section of the movie has to do with Officer Farva, the fat, belligerent black sheep of the Super Trooper family. Once he gets the opportunity to walk the beat after being banned, he immediately goes on a trail of terror that begins with his cruel and crude version of a Super Trooper prank and ends with him in jail in a homage to First Blood's delousing scene. It's a truly great comic performance. I'm surprised that this movie is so polarizing, with a number of 1-star reviews peppered among all the raves. The comparisons to Police Academy seem totally off-base to me. Police Academy is filled with juvenile, obvious, ham-fisted gags, while Super Troopers humor is more diverse and effective. There's clever dialogue, gross-out humor, and physical comedy, and it all works really well. The criticisms that the plot is weak seem kind of pointless to me. Many great comedies don't have strong narratives (eg. Monty Python's movies, the Farrelly Bros' movies). It's really more of a question of whether the movie offers the laughs and quickly, and Super Trooper definitely delivers the goods in this area.
Movie Review: A solid comedy and a substantial DVD Summary: 5 Stars
Super Troopers presents itself as an odd goofball comedy that has only one real purpose- to make you laugh. Thankfully, the movie fulfills this promise, and how.Generally, movies scripted by comedy troupes can be trusted to entertain. A look at Monty Python and the Holy Grail or the Kids in the Hall's Brain Candy should validate this point. Broken Lizard (the fledgling troupe behind Super Troopers) continue this tradition of hilarious skits centered around a simple plot. The basic premise of the film involves Vermont Highway Patrol troopers who, due to the lack of crime, find creative ways of alleviating their boredom- mainly, messing with pulled-over drivers (such as the should-be-famous "meow" scene) and brawling with the local police force. The jokes constantly remain fresh, and the film even manages to defy the greatest of comedy film curses by never getting boring. Super Troopers is also loaded with some great gags and one-liners not appropriate enough for advertising. (Such as any scene involving the Germans, each one of them greatly funny.) The DVD is, while not great, definately good. A substantial amount of extras are included containing several extended scenes, and alternate ending, outtakes, trailers, and shameless promotions. (The outtakes aren't what you think they are, and, I'll admit, are a little boring, but stick through it because the Farva Puking segment is priceless.) Also included are two commentary tracks featuring members of Broken Lizard, the standard scene selections, and some rather impressive menus. (On the main menu, just watch for 30-40 seconds for the butterfly- you'll thank me.) To sum up, Super Troopers is exactly what it tries to show itself as- nothing groundbreaking or innovational, but still an incredibly smart, and most importantly, fun comedy.
