Movie Reviews of Sunshine

Movie Review: A film for the intelligent and lovers of beauty
Summary: 5 Stars

Being a fan of director Danny Boyle's films (namely, 28 Days Later and Millions), I had some idea of what I was in for as I entered the theater.

Boyle's film 'Sunshine' does not assume the viewer is an idiot, which so many films today seem to do. Frankly, I find such treatment insulting. So, when a film comes out without the anchor of an assumedly idiotic audience, I am pleased.

The premise seems like that of so many science fiction films, but the film itself goes way beyond. Intense genre-jumping ensues and beautiful shots lend appreciation to otherwise possibly horrific scenes.

To me, beyond the veil of religious statements and sci-fi 'what if's', the film seemed to be about making choices-- of any sort. It also seemed to be a statement of connections between humans and the value (or perhaps lack thereof) of a human life. Science versus religion comes into play and the age-old 'all humans deserve to die' concept, but those aren't really the film's most important aspects.

Danny Boyle beautifully weaves the characters through each other and into the plot and his amazing imagery and shot choices bring the film to a new level and help to play up Sunshine's themes. The quick slices of previous moments and the parallelism from the beginning of the film to the end really allow for a solid mood throughout all the emotional shifts.

Movie Review: Uncompromising science fiction film
Summary: 5 Stars

I saw this film in the theatre twice and loved it. This movie is more for the real science fiction fan than the casual fan- someone who would enjoy 'Solaris' or 'Silent Running' much more than 'Aliens vs Predator' or 'Starship Troopers.' The plot revolves around a small group of astronauts piloting a giant spaceship (Icarus II) that must deliver an immense nuclear bomb to the heart of the sun. Far in the future our son is dying. While in transit with their powerful payload they encounter many problems, including tensions with each other. That the previous mission (Icarus I)vanished mysteriously only adds more tension as the crew contemplates that most likely they are on a one way journey. Their loved ones and all of mankind are counting on them.

The special effects are superb. The sets, futuristic yet spartan, are very convincing. The giant ship with it's thousands of polished mirrors to shield it from the sun is a special effects marvel. Director Danny Boyle (28 days later) has crafted a truly enjoyable science fiction tale. This DVD features deleted scenes and an alternate ending. In the theatrical release the ending is the only part that dissapoints as the director goes for an ending more in line with what AVP fans would like. My suggestion check out the alternate ending. The movie is highly crafted and a great addition to your science fiction collection.

Movie Review: "Good Day Sunshine"
Summary: 5 Stars

In the nearby future - 2057 to be precisely - the sun is dying. The only hope for mankind to survive is to ignite a gigantic atom-bomb in the core of the sun in order to rekindle her energy. The Icarus II is on her way to the sun to deliver her payload.

A few of the key-role players are Dr. Searle, a psychologist played by Cliff Curtis, Dr. Capa, a brilliant thirty year old physicist played by Cillian Murphy and the excellent Benedict Wong in the role of Dr. Trey the brilliant mathematician but responsible for huge problems with the
Icarus II.
John Murphy and Underworld are responsible for the excellent and quiet electric guitar music.

The first thirty minutes are slow paced and maybe a little tedious, with an emphasis on brilliant special effects (one of the strongest points of this movie.) But after that the tension and drama are gradually build up to the dramatic end sequence.

It's one of the best SF-movies I ever saw. It can compete with "Space-Odyssey 2001", "Solaris", and "Alien".

For those who want more background information about the meaning of several scenes in the film, and are interested in astronomy and astrophysics, I would strongly suggest to play the movie a second time with the audio-commentary by the English physicist Dr. Brian Cox of the University of Manchester.

Movie Review: What all Sci-Fi Should Be
Summary: 5 Stars

Sunshine is one of those movies where you sit down not really knowing what to expect. Is it going to be like 2001 or Solaris or more like Jason X or Event Horizon? It is a little of all these. The pacing begins with a 2001 feel and then moves into making you think the way Solaris does but adds the tension of films like Jason X and Event Horizon without the confusion and disorganized plots. The over all look of the film is akin to The Fountain.

However Sunshine stands on it's own. Directed by Danny Boyle of Trainspoting and 28 Days Later fame, it is a prime example of what Sci-Fi should be, an intense look at humanity, what we can accomplish and questioning if we should do so. In this case our dying sun brings to light the question: If God has chosen us to die should we or do we have the right to defy God's will, if we have the knowledge and ability to save ourselves, is it right to do so?

Humanity chooses to survive and sends a mission to reignite the sun. They call it Icarus after the man who had wings and flew into the sun. He died and so did the first mission. Mankind sends a second mission, one last hope. Icarus II reaches the sun... they discover the question and what happened to Icarus I. The intensity is revved up, will they succeed or will mankind freeze to death without the Sun.

Movie Review: Today's "2001"
Summary: 5 Stars

With it's captivating cinematography, gripping storyline, and fantastic character interaction, I daresay that "Sunshine" may well be the "2001: A Space Odyssey" of today.

"Sunshine" positively blew me away upon first look. This masterful film manages to blend detailed science with engaging fiction perfectly. To those of you who argue about the timeline of the Sun's waning...take it as an alternate scenario to the status quo--IF this were the situation, then "Sunshine" is how it might play out.

The cinematography is beautiful and captivating. As always, Danny Boyle manages to pull his audience in to his film and keep them locked in. Never before have I seen such an amazing and awe-inspiring look at our System's center, short of NASA footage.

Cillian Murphy plays a great role, both stoic and complex simultaneously. Chris Evans manages to pull away from his earlier "pop" roles ("Fantastic Four," "Not Another Teen Movie") long enough to play a very strong character in the film, playing of Cillian (and vice-versa) perfectly.

This is a must-see for the science-fiction fanatic. This is a must-own for anyone who considers themselves to be a connoisseur of cinema. Get this film.
