Movie Reviews of SunshineMovie Review: A brilliant and refreshingly creative film Summary: 5 Stars
I am an "Americanized Hungarian" living in San Francisco, and Sunshine was the first Hungarian film I ever had the chance to see in theater distribution in the US. It also happened to be one of the best movies I saw in 2000, regardless of the subject matter. It is practically impossible these days to see a good historical movie that addresses the great conflicts (I and II World Wars, revolutions, etc) of this century NOT from the American (or occasionally British) perspective but from another. Kudos for director Istvan Szabo for recognizing that if he uses English speaking actors he can reach a significantly larger audience with his picture!! - so please understand why the actors are almost all English - Further kudos for having made such a beautiful movie. Sunshine is not just an esthetically, but in every way beautiful movie. Please give it a chance and watch it, lend it to your friends, and buy it as a present. If you were not in Eastern Europe during the wars, you will understand what really was going on there, in the lives of people, and not on the battlefields and conference rooms. It will open your mind and your heart.
Movie Review: Poignant and Beautiful film Summary: 5 Stars
I loved this film. It's rather long, but the time is well spent. It's really three stories in one as the film deals with the events of 4 generations of a high middle class family of Jewish Hungarians as they live through the Hapsburg empire, its fall in WW1, the Nazi perios, the Communist period and beyond the 1956 soviet Invasion. fiennes plays the first born heir in each generation. There are plenty of history lessons and even a well built sequence of scenes involving fencing. As the film becomes engrossed in the Nazi era - as well as other parts - the film deals with anti-semitism; however, it's not the Speolberg shove down your throat kind of depoction. It's more subtle and far more effective as it emphasises the common humanity that this family shared with the rest of the world. Underscorimng the beauty of the film and the story is the poignant music of Schubert's Fantasia for 2 pianos which is amsot a family songs as its members all play the piano. I advise it's not a happy film, but it is ultimately optimistic. It is certainly a beautiful film.
Movie Review: 5 Stars - a masterpiece Summary: 5 Stars
An epic story that could have used a better title. I had heard nothing about this picture when I rented it (or at least don't remember hearing anything). Excellent settings and scenery. Superb character development. Although seeing Ralph Fiennes keep being reincarnated from generation to generation gets somewhat tedious. He does a very good acting job with it none the less. This was an amazing story of several generations of one Jewish family in Hungary. I would compare it to The Pianist or Dr. Zhivago. A five star movie that should have been promoted more. The title was inappropriate no matter how fitting it was to the family name or the theme. I only wish producers would weigh a title more before following thru with it. The family name's actual spelling would have fit it better. Or, something else. I must see movie worth owning. Sometimes the lust and power get to be a little much but I wouldn't hold it against this masterpiece. I do agree that this movie could have made as two or three seperate movies.
Movie Review: The goal is to prevail ! Summary: 5 Stars
The civilization does not suppress the barbarousness ; it improves it . This bitter thought of Voltaire is extraordinary appropriate for this film .
Once more Szabo shows all his over gifted powers in this genuine expression of the exquisite cinema art in this epic drama around a Budapest family struggled to survive the antiSemitIsm that permeates the successive generations . Magnificent job of recreating the details of the Ancient Austrian Hungarian Empire , nazi and Communist in Hungary .
Ralph Fiennes shows us once more why he is on of the best world actors in the world . he plays three different roles - father , son and grand son in that family .
This story has been told too many times before but you know what it happens when a genius finds a material ; he transforms it giving amazing results.
Movie Review: Quite Possibly the Greatest Movie Ever Made... Summary: 5 Stars
Sunshine, starring Ralph Finnes, is an epic drama, spanning from the mid-1800's to after post-World War 2. The movie is about four generations of a Jewish family, following them as they go through their lifes and hardships. Wonderful acting, excellent script, beautiful music... this movie has everything a great movie needs. Ralph Fiennes plays quite a few parts in this outstanding film. Of the most powerfull scenes in the movie is the scene in a Nazi Prison Camp. This is truly a movie of epic proportions, too. It is 381 minutes. The DVD has no special features, though. But the picture and sound quality are great. I reccomend this movie to all, because it is a beautiful movie worth watching at least once.
