Movie Reviews of Sunshine [Blu-ray]Movie Review: So good at first Summary: 4 Stars
I really liked this movie and where it was going. Though in the end it seemed to get confused and had to throw in some very wierd almost supernatural stuff which I didnt care for and had already seen in Event Horizon.
Not many movies get released about outer space anymore which is wierd, so it was nice to see Sunshine come out even though I missed it in the theaters. I made sure to buy it on Blu-Ray (I support both formats just so ya know), and damn it looked good on my 61 Samsung DLP. Every shot of the sun was breathtaking. When you see Mercury crossing the sun it looks almost like you are right there on the ship with them. I think I rewound that scene about 4 times watching every detail. I cant tell you much about the sound since I'm waiting on buying new speakers. But the PQ was really nice when it needed to be.
The movie itself starts off with the crew on the ship heading to the Sun. Which is good, cause I really didnt want to see the backstory and watching family cry and waving bye to their loved ones that wont be back for years. The story is interesting, even if it is hard to believe you could even get close to the sun. I really enjoyed the whole thing until about 3/4's of the way through when the 'twist' happens. That part made me so mad and it was so cliche that they should have never done it. It went from being somewhat realistic to being a comic book in my opinion.
I wanted to rate the movie 3 stars, but just couldnt do it. I enjoyed the movie to much at the beginning and the scenerey was out of this world (pun INTENDED).
Movie Review: Captivated, yet bored...strange Summary: 4 Stars
I completely understand why people would hate this film. The final act is such a violent swerve in pace and story, a bad misdirection, that it detracts from the whole.
However, the subduing soundtrack, mixed with some vibrant, beautiful, directing techniques had me transfixed.
The story is of the dysfunctional crew of the Pegasus. A deepspace craft whose sole purpose is to reignite our dying star. Much like Pacino's 'Insomnia' there is a strong sense of days, weeks and months bluring into one long day. The editing and direction conveys the lulling, tired and taught crew's emotions with vivid perfection.
I found a wonderful beat to the action, which is slow, akin to 2001 Space Oyssey. But the majesty of the voyage, the Pegasus, and the relationships of the fraught crew is very gripping.
It's a shame Boyle didn't have a great ending, as what he came up with feels a little like he had a great concept but couldn't fulfil the final act. That's probably a little unfair as it does fit well with the theme of finding and becoming God, the giver of life. Still, the Zombie-esque finale doesn't quite fit.
It's not a film for most, perobably a sunday afternoon film to snooze to in most cases, but I liked it.
Space is Man's final conquest. The nature of our species is to explore and discover. It's what drives us to evolve. Our Solar system is so close, yet so far from our grasp, and anything that brings me closer to it excites my senses.
Movie Review: The sun shines bright with this one Summary: 4 Stars
This was a great movie. Ever since I read "The Beach" I have been following Alex Garland's writing career (novels have dropped off but his screenplays are stellar). I should start this by saying that I am not a scientist and cannot support or deny the theory or technology used for the film. What I can tell you is that they tell you what you need to know and don't get too hung up on the details. You can read the plot synopsis to get the gist of this little thriller so I won't bore you with those details. What I will tell you is that this is a science fiction film, but also a study of human behavior. These people are on a mission to the sun and it haunts thier dreams. Imagine spending two years behind a solar shield where the only thing in your line of sight is the sun. It affects these people and that is the true purpose of the film. The film also carries until about 2/3 of the way through without an antagonist. Once this person makes thier presence known, it truly paints a picture of what obsession means and how people handle it. The acting is average (Cliff Curtis and Cillian Murphy are awesome) and Danny Boyle as usual uses clever camera angles, a haunting score, and proves he can work well with special effects. I give this movie 4 1/2 stars. If you have a blue ray player, it is truly the only way to view this film. Enjoy.
Movie Review: Spectacular preformance with an "iffy" end Summary: 4 Stars
I'm not one to tarnish a great cinematic work by the ending alone; yes, it is sad, but that isn't my issue. Rather, Sunshine lost me (like most) with the introduction of the "crazed, subhuman serial killer in space", and the subsequent attempt to turn into a horror flick. It takes you away a bit, but it doesn't overshadow the fact that the rest of the movie -- the good 3/4ths in the beginning -- is very thrilling and wonderfully immersive.
I did, however, have a few queries with the plot:
- Why is the sun "dying" what seems a thousand, if not a few hundreds of years before its 5-or-so billion year deadline?
- Has some tragedy such as a nuclear winter befallen Earth, instead?
- If it truly DOES take place billions of years from now, why do people still look like... well, people? And why is our technology virtually unchanged?
The movie doesn't clear a lot of that up whatsoever. Despite being picky with it, though, it made me cry with every viewing and it is a beautiful, interesting little glimpse into yet another, I think, sci-fi hit.
Movie Review: Great movie, but some versions won't play on Sony Blu-Ray players Summary: 4 Stars
I like the movie, but I have to give the Blu-Ray version only 1 star because it won't play on Sony Blu-Ray players (both stand alone and PS3). It used to work but Sony shipped firmware to add 3D functionality for other titles and it broke the ability to play this disk. When you play the movie, the video commentaries come up picture in picture style and you CANNOT disable the pop ups. It has been broken for half a year now and despite two firmware updates from Sony it is still broken. Don't buy this disk if you have a Sony player until Sony fixes this.
Update 01/19/11: Fox has fixed the issue (unknown if it was actually Fox or Sony's problem, but Fox fixed it.) I received a free replacement disk. Make sure if you buy this and you have a Sony player, you get the latest version of the disk which has a UPC code ending in "82" and not the broken one ending in "80".
Broken version gets 1 star. Fixed version gets 4 stars.
