Movie Reviews of Sunshine [Blu-ray]Movie Review: Philosophical and visually arresting - great film for a small crowd Summary: 5 Stars
I think one of my friend's reaction best sums up the mainstream perspective: bubble-gum in mouth, she yawned several times throughout the movie, and ended with "that was kinda boring sorry" . Well, it was expected. This is no Star Wars, Alien, or Armageddon. Those were geared toward entertainment; this movie is brain food imo. It caters to the crowd that likes the immersive experience rather than the actual plot - which some hardcore sci-fi fans consider too unrealistic. Suspend your astrophysics misgivings and the whole concept of the Sun dying and then you'll truly appreciate the movie.
Sunshine is more about the sanity of the astronauts sent to do this mission for mankind's survival. Watch the tensions between people, why having a psychologist on board was crucial, the consequences of doing anything wrong to jeopardize the payload, etc. Only then will you empathize with later characters in the movie like ***SPOILER [the other captain trying to kill the crew b.c of his religious beliefs and of mankind's relationship with God and the universe.]****
Add to the above extraordinary visuals - here I was most surprised, as low-budget as the movie was its visuals look like a Stanley Kubrick creation. It looks simply beautiful in 1080P (yes, buy on Blu Ray just for the video quality) with a great score by John Murphy (28 Days Later rmr?).
Reminds me a lot of films like Gattaca, Vanilla Sky, Solaris, and 2001: a Space Odyssey. I'm sad to see only 3.5 stars for this; IMDb has a more agreeable 7.3 rating from 50,000 ppl. If you love artsy and deep musing movies (but not technically accurate lol) please watch this!
Movie Review: Beautiful and Distressing Summary: 5 Stars
Incredible to behold in high definition, Sunshine sets high expectations with the ambitious plot and lives up to them marvellously, albeit in a more "movie-ish" manner that sci-fi connoisseurs could distaste. Things must go wrong in this mission to make it a movie. As much as I didn't like the way they happened, (poor judgement by captain), I still found myself immensely entertained by the suspensful scrambles of the crew to overcome these obstacles and by the visual style of Danny Boyle. Sunshine ends as an allegory on humans and god with extremists on both sides creating an enthralling climax. Should men alter the course of nature to prevent his own demise? When considering an event of extreme magnitude, (like the sun dying), the answer could become more controversial for religious fundamentalists. The visual, suspenseful, and philosophical elements kept my interest after dismissing the scientific validity of the plot. My remote scientific knowledge does contain the fact that the sun will outlive humans by billions of years so I decided to not question the circumstances of these astronauts and let the film's virtues shine. And they shined ever so brightly.
Movie Review: Fantastic Sci-Fi with a twist of Suspense/Horror Summary: 5 Stars
I really love this movie. If you don't know, it takes place on a space ship on a mission to restart the failing nuclear powerplant that gives us life with a huge nuclear bomb. But, amazingly, that's never really the point. It's one of those great sci-fi movies that isn't itself about being in space *coughstartrekcough*. The claustrophobia of the environment, the extreme stress of being part of mission of this nature, all of that is almost palpable. It asks the question of how would one act when pushed to the limits of isolation and with the weight of all humanity on one's back.
I also liked the change in pace near the end of the movie. It breaks things up a little, of which I'm a fan. I'll also say that every single actor brings something special to the table. Every one. That doesn't happen very often. Truly a small but amazing cast. I'm surprised that it never got the wide advertisement and release that it deserved in theaters.
The Blu-ray transfer is really high quality, as well. Highly recommended.

Sunshine Blu-ray Exchange Program
Posted January 13, 2011 04:20 AM
Blu-ray enthusiasts have been reporting playback issues with the Blu-ray release of Sunshine. Now, 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment has come through and made available replacement Blu-ray discs for any consumer that has had an issue playing their copy of Sunshine. Consumers should contact Fox customer service at 888-223-4369, where their name and address will be taken down for a replacement disc.
The issue was that the BD's picture-in-picture track turned itself on and couldn't be switched off, which made impossible to watch the movie itself. Several players were affected, including the PS3 (after a recent firmware update).
Movie Review: Intelligent and Visually Stunning Summary: 5 Stars
THE MOVIE: Although I am not the biggest science fiction fan, Sunshine looked intriguing to me. I decided to rent the film from Netflix (my first Blu-ray rental) and I was blown away. Apart from the visuals, this is a smart, intense, and intellectually stimulating film. Directed by the brilliant Danny Boyle (28 Days Later), the film explores the plight of eight astronauts determined to reignite the dying sun in order to preserve life on Earth. Complications arise and tensions surmount. There is some brilliant writing, acting, and directing here. I particularly enjoyed the balance the film makes between action and moral dilemma. 5/5
THE DISC: This is a stunning Blu-ray disc. The visuals are absolutely amazing. Each shot is so clear and clean. After watching this film I turned on regular television and could not believe how awful the channels looked compared to this movie! This is definitely a great purchase to show off your HDTV.
